General Description of Position:
Plan, administer, direct, assess, implement, and evaluate all aspects of the district school nutrition program. The Director of Food & Nutrition Services shall partner with others in the school and community to solicit support for the development of a nutrition-based program.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Employs management techniques that maintain an efficient and effective program
Implements the policies and procedures of the Board of School Trustees, Indiana Department of Education Food and Nutrition Programs, and the United States Department of Agriculture; develops long and short term goals for the child nutrition program that supports the philosophy and policies of the Board of School Trustees

Reviews current research and other information to determine health and nutrition-related trends, foodservice management developments, and other issues that may affect school nutrition programs
Develops new and innovative program changes and expansions based on applied and foodservice research
Implements information management systems that increase productivity and efficiency
Maintains a fiscally sound child nutrition program while staying in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies
Plans, supervises, and administers an operational budget in cooperation with the Business Manager and school district financial personnel
Maintains appropriate nutrition and financial records for the child nutrition program in accordance with the State Board of Accounts and federal guidelines including but not limited to monthly profit and loss reports, monthly inventory of food and commodities, monies on account, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
Prepares monthly participation, profit, and loss reports to monitor financial operation of school nutrition program; prepares annual financial report for Indiana State Board of Education
Implements accounting systems and standards, including appropriate software, to operate a fiscally sound program that meets state and federal guidelines of program accountability
Develops methods to recruit, select, place, train, supervise, and evaluate personnel in the child nutrition programs in cooperation with the Personnel Department
Trains foodservice employees in the use of computer technology to improve individual school nutrition programs efficiently and effectively
Creates and Implements departmental policies
Develops job performance standards, identifies relationships of positions, and provides for performance improvement in staff
Establishes standards for the professional growth of the school district foodservice staff. Coordinates training of foodservice staff
Develops and integrates employee safety procedures into all phases of the foodservice operation
Implements a customer driven program that focuses on satisfaction and value
Establishes quality standards for the child nutrition program, specifically with regard to presentation and service
Monitors health, safety, and sanitation standards in all schools in cooperation with the School City of Hammond Operations Department, the Lake County Health Department, and the Indiana Department of Public Health
Supervises menu planning and food preparation process
Serves as a consultant to parents, staff, and administration in matters regarding child nutrition
Monitors compliance with district wellness plan
Assists parents, teachers, and healthcare provider in planning menus for students with special dietary needs
Serves as the district consultant on matters related to nutrition
Serves as a consultant to the Culinary Arts Program personnel at the Area Career Center
Purchases, receives, and stores, and accounts for quality food and supplies for the child nutrition program in accordance with local and state guidelines in cooperation with the school purchasing department
Implements an effective procurement system that complies with local, state, and federal laws
Develops procedures to ensure the food production system that is efficient, effective, and provides safe nutritious food of high quality
Develops procurement guidelines to ensure purchased food and supplies reflect product knowledge, customer demand, district needs, and nutrition objectives
Establishes standards for receiving, storing, and inventorying food and non-food supplies; maintains monthly inventory of food inventory as a monthly report of assets
Responsible for planning and supervising catering events for school administration and school organizations
Procures and maintains foodservice equipment in cooperation with the School City of Hammond Maintenance Department, monitors preventive maintenance program, and plans for replacement of equipment based upon effective management practices
Develops a marketing plan to inform the students, staff, and the public in regard to department services, and to enhance the image of the child nutrition program
Develops guidelines for providing services in response to disaster or emergency situations
Acts as a member of school district committees as requested including, but not limited to district wellness advisory council
Belongs to professional organizations including, but not limited to, the Indiana School Nutrition Association (ISNA), School Nutrition Association (SNA), Indiana Association of School Business Officials (IASBO), and Association of School Business Officials (ASBO)
Attends School Board meetings; attends and participates in local, state, and national conferences to maintain standards of excellence in child nutrition matters
Any additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Superintendent
Other Requirements:
Minimum of five years of child nutrition management experience; multi-unit experience desired
Possesses strong written and oral communication skills
National certification in food service sanitation (ServSafe through National Restaurant Association or equivalent)
