Our Northern California region located in Livermore is seeking a Director of Field Services,to provide leadership, guidance and oversight of several service oriented departments that support the region's field operations. Specifically, this position directs and supervises the managers of the Equipment (Shop), Dispatch, Small Tools and GPS Field Support departments in their support of the region's project needs.

JOB SUMMARY: A primary function of the position will be managing the region's shop operations in an effort to ensure equipment is well maintained and utilized to its fullest capacity while ensuring the dispatch department is providing the field with the appropriate equipment, tools or supplies they need to build projects safely and profitably. This role will have full financial responsibility (mostly expense control targets and procurement) for the various departments supervised while ensuring that processes are streamlined, standardized and automated.

Most importantly, this position will be responsible for leading, managing and developing a team of people across a variety of departments with an intense focus on ensuring they are providing exceptional customer service to the field.

This role reports directly to the Division President of the California operation and will reside on the region's management team helping establish strategic initiatives, annual goals, and change management opportunities.


Shop Operations

  • Assume full P&L responsibility for the shop with a focus on increased utilization (both internal and external), the reduction of rental equipment expense and overall cost management

  • Evaluate, enhance and implement standardized shop processes and procedures, specifically in the areas of equipment maintenance, fuel management, small tools distribution, job site supply distribution, etc.

  • Oversee the Master Mechanic and his staff to ensure optimal equipment performance by providing a high level of equipment service, reliability, and proactive preventative maintenance measures

  • Assist the GBI Corporate Equipment Dept. in the evaluation, negotiation and eventual purchase (or lease) of all major equipment and vehicles as well as the disposal/sale of capital assets

  • Work with the Corporate Equipment Finance Manager to function as an advisor to management/Estimators on new methods of presenting contract rates to customers during pre-bid or project phase

Dispatch/Small Tools

  • Evaluate and enhance (when appropriate) current processes and procedures, establishing metrics in which to measure the service results of the department (i.e. service level agreements)

  • Ensure the current departmental structure can successfully support multiple regions and provide appropriate customer service levels to remote geographical projects

  • Optimize the process for dispatch orders received from field for equipment and manpower and distribute accurate directions to field employees and execute efficient and effective equipment mobilizations across regions while complying with regulations and project specific requirements

  • Streamline the management, distribution and tracking of all small tools and job supplies (i.e. barricades, K-rail, etc.) with a focus on master purchase agreements or volume discounting


  • Enforce safety policies and procedures within the department with the goal of achieving zero incidents, lost time injuries, and property damage claims

  • Promote safe work practices across the Field Service organization enforcing safety systems, policies and procedures (i.e. timely incident reporting, weekly toolbox meetings, etc.) and communications

  • Attend and actively participate in regional safety meetings

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational safety workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies

  • Stay abreast of new industry standards, trends and compliance with DOT, and State and Federal Regulations for the departments managed

General Management

  • Responsible for hiring across all departments supervised

  • Provide direct reports with motivation, leadership, direction and coaching to achieve work and individual career objectives while improving performance and skills

  • Develop strategic plans for the Field Support Services organization and create annual business plans/departmental budgets and then managing key performance indicators and/or metrics ensuring annual goals are met

  • Supports continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities for savings or improved efficiency

  • Completes special projects and performs other related duties as required



  • Four Year Bachelor's Degree; Equipment or Construction Management Major a plus


  • 18+ years of proven success in customer service oriented departments
  • 10+ years of heavy equipment management experience (i.e. specifically maintenance, purchasing, etc.)
  • 10+ years of management/supervisory experience a must

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in MS Office required
  • HCSS Equipment 360 (or equivalent)
  • HCSS Dispatcher and Viewpoint Vista software a plus

Other Requirements:

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills

  • Strong experience in managing equipment utilization/maintenance

  • Experience with strategic and financial planning a plus
