Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Understands multiple cultural frameworks, values norms, and demonstrates an ability to flex style when faced with various dimensions of culture in order to be effective.Recognizes the dynamics of racism and other isms, addressing problematic equity-related issues in individual teams.

Strategy: Develops and implements an equity framework for the affiliate which includes goals, objectives and strategies that are aligned with the mission, values and strategic direction. Develops strategies to recruit and retain a diverse workforce.

Cross-Group Collaboration: Works collaboratively with other affiliate leaders to modify, improve, and operationalize a results-oriented racial equity plan to increase collective knowledge and integrated outcomes. Collaborates to build internal engagement and accountability measures for equity, diversity and inclusion at all levels.

Human Resources Expertise: Understanding of labor, leave and employment laws and the ability to accurately analyze and interpret laws and internal policies.

Leadership & Supervision: Manages volunteer programs & provides direct supervision to a total of three staff members. Able to positively and pro-actively manage, motivate and supervise staff, which includes hiring, training, evaluating and assigning work to volunteers & staff.

Consultation: Provides consultation to affiliate leaders on equity, diversity and inclusion work and makes recommendations to overcome barriers. Provides support & coaching to individuals, managers and groups regarding cross-cultural conflicts, as well as policies and practices that might have an equity impact.

Partnership Development: Cultivates and maintains effective partnerships with diverse external organizations, thought leaders & vendors in order to inform the agencys strategy for racial equity work and other diversity and inclusion objectives.

Community Engagement: Provides oversight for the affiliates community engagement and outreach activities related to equity, diversity and inclusion focused initiatives.

Impact Measurement: Develops processes and systems to evaluate and measure the impact of racial equity and other diversity and inclusion work. Gathers, analyzes and presents equity related data. Prepares reports including an annual, comprehensive report.

Training Development: Develop and deliver equity trainings (such as implicit bias training) and other learning materials, coach and mentor colleagues on equity related development, and conduct and communicate equity assessments.

Project Management: Provides oversight and management of all committees, groups, and caucuses supporting the affiliates equity, diversity and inclusion efforts by establishing goals, work plans, meeting agendas, offsite planning sessions & manages the department budget.


7 years management experience OR three (3) years + Masters Degree.

5 years successful experience and leadership in advancing equity and inclusion programs (can be included within 7 years of management experience).

1 year Human Resources experience: Understanding of labor, leave and employment laws and the ability to accurately analyze and interpret laws and internal policies.


Bachelors degree required in one of the following or similar fields: Diversity, Human Resources Management, Organizational Development, Education, Communications

Under general direction, this individual will evaluate, plan, organize, direct, and facilitate the activities that support Harborview Medical Center's capacity to care for a diverse patient population and workforce. This leader will administer and implement the UW Medicine Equity Council's mandate and operations, and support activities and special projects to implement a work plan that provides all organizational divisions within Harborview Medical Center a sustainable framework to support a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. These responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, directing the professional, operational, marketing, financial, personnel, and educational activities associated with advancing EDI at Harborview Medical Center and as part of the larger UW Medicine health system. The Director of Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion also serves as an expert resource and partner for issues related to equitable care, access and outcomes for patients at HMC as well as across the enterprise (UW Medicine) through active engagement with UW Medicine's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion efforts, including a comprehensive approach to improving healthcare equity and reducing healthcare disparities across the UW Medicine clinical sites of practice. The Director of Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion is responsible for independent decision-making, planning, and taking actions based on identified organization goals and strategic objectives. This individual will represent the best interests of HMC and UW Medicine as one of the primary EDI leaders in the health system. Reporting directly to the HMC Executive Director, the EDI Director will be accountable for: Strategic Program Design, Implementation, and Program Management & Operations; Analytics, Reporting, & Continuous Program Improvement; and, Special Projects REQUIREMENTS: At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience with management of equity-focused programs and initiatives in a large, complex healthcare setting. Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Business, Public Health, Health Administrator, or other related field (Master's degree preferred). Experience working with diverse populations as colleagues and direct reports. Experience in a leadership role. Training and ongoing individual work in assessing and decreasing own biases, supporting inclusion. Effective communication and service excellence skills. Demonstrated management/leadership skills including organization, time, and project management. Project planning management experience. Public speaking and presentation skills. Data knowledge/skill using a variety of different software. Ability to coordinate information gathering and dissemination within a complex clinical and administrative system. Ability to lead multidisciplinary clinical and non-clinical implementation projects. Knowledge of hospital environment and healthcare trends.
