Our technology team is already helping schools bring personalized learning tools to teachers and schools across the country and supporting scientists around the world as they develop a comprehensive reference atlas of all cells in the human body.
Our team is seeking a creative, inquisitive and versatile engineering director to lead multiple software teams focused on the exploration, visualization and transformation of scientific data. You will have the opportunity to work closely with a collaborative team of scientists, engineers, product managers, designers and user researchers, building software that accelerates the pace of the biological sciences. Example projects include data infrastructure for the Human Cell Atlas, sequencing platforms for infectious disease (IDseq), exploration of high dimensionality data describing the characteristics of single cells (cellxgene), next-generation visualization of microscopy data (napari), and analysis pipelines for spatial transcriptomics (starfish). This is an excellent opportunity for a person with extraordinary engineering management skills and a passion for science.
Collaborate with leaders in Science, Product Management, and User Research to identify high impact engineering projects and provide technical evaluation and recommendations.
Map out engineering resource needs and help to establish engineering culture and best practices
Recruit engineering team members of all levels.
Lead a multi-level team (manager of managers) and lead a growing engineering team.
Handle and coordinate technical roadmaps with external teams and partners.
Ensure the team's ability to understand project requirements, build effective technical project roadmaps and plans, and ship high quality products.
Shown ability to assemble and lead large engineering teams who ship products.
10+ years of experience in roles relevant to software engineering and development with at least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
5+ years of experience as an engineering manager, particularly in a high-growth environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a bias toward an open, transparent cultural practices.
Demonstrated ability to build highly aligned and productive teams and working environments, across both distributed and ad hoc teams, with fluid and/or diverse goals.
Experience with development projects at various stages of maturity (concept to ship to end-of-life).
Experience in one or more of the following areas is a plus: machine learning, recommendation systems, pattern recognition, large-scale data mining, artificial intelligence, data platforms, data visualization, server architectures, and distributed systems.
Experience in one of the biological sciences (biology, biochemistry, computational biology, pharmacology, genomics, etc) is a plus.
