Director of Engineering, MCFR

TerraPower, LLC. is seeking a highly motivated Director of Engineering to direct the engineering team in the execution of the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) development. This role is a manager of managers position with elements of people management, process management, and project coordination to assure technical adequacy of design work in accordance with company, contract, and industry standards. The Director of Engineering will report to the MCFR Program Lead/Senior Vice President to fulfill engineering's role in the design authority process, to provide ongoing direction and support to engineering discipline teams and to maintain an engineering organization of the highest quality.

Responsibilities:

Engineering Staff Responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates the work of the engineering groups / Discipline Managers

  • Oversees engineering staff and ensures they meet goals and objectives

  • Assist in all aspects of engineering talent management, training, qualification, mentorship and development

  • Assist in all aspects of the performance management process

  • Recommend staff changes (replacements due to attrition, new requirements, de-staffing)

  • Develop and execute staffing strategies for engineering in collaboration with Project Managers and Discipline Managers with active participation in the interview process

  • Assist in the planning, monitoring, and updating of the engineering labor and external budget

Engineering Process and Procedure Responsibilities

  • Assist in continuous improvement of the engineering organization, including processes, structure, roles and responsibilities

  • Actively works to improve engineering processes and procedures

  • Ensure that work execution and technical adequacy are in accordance with requirements, project standards, procedures and industry standards

  • Monitor and provide oversight of verification activities

  • Actively lead change management efforts through teamwork and collaboration within engineering and with all interfacing organizations

  • Support and Improve the Systems Engineering approach to design activities

  • Approve PRs for engineering procurements within authority level per company policy

Project Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and execution of projects

  • Resolve priority conflicts in conjunction with the Project Managers when issues cannot be resolved at the Discipline Manager level

  • Assist the executive leadership team and program management with strategy development

  • Leadership Responsibilities

  • Keep senior management informed of major emerging technical issues.

  • Interface with regulators, stakeholders, and customers on engineering design issues

  • Actively lead communication efforts with support teams, disciplines, projects, and the executive team

  • Actively participate in and support the Corrective Action Program

  • Demonstrate visible, continuous leadership in the areas of safety and quality

Accountabilities

  • Accountable to the Senior Vice President, MCFR for management direction and to ensure that projects are designed in a safe, reliable and efficient manner in accordance with policies and all applicable laws, regulations, codes, standards, and technical requirements

  • Accountable to the Project Managers and Project Engineers for the development of engineering specific guides and standards which implement the project design requirements and for having project design performed with trained and qualified engineers

  • Authorities

  • Resolving priority conflicts within resource constraints and project requirements

  • Approval of PRs for engineering procurements per authority matrix

  • Approve engineering deliverables

  • Approve engineering process, tools and methods

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • At least 15+ years of experience in the nuclear industry with a B.S. in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering, or other relevant program from an accredited university, or an M.S. or Ph.D. with commensurate experience. Experience in the power industry or other highly regulated industries may be applicable

  • At least 6 years in a combined technical / manager role with responsibilities for performance of project technical scope, in addition to other manager responsibilities

  • Demonstrated experience leading / supervising design and configuration of nuclear power reactors or similarly complex / multiple discipline close coupled systems

  • Experience with successful teamwork and collaboration on design projects, overcoming barriers and obstacles, and being a positive change agent

  • Experience leading/supervising coordination of resources to support preparation of design deliverables with a system engineering approach

  • Experience directing work through engineering phases from conceptual, preliminary and final design

  • Experience with testing, verification and validation activities for nuclear design and software

  • Must have experience in performing nuclear design to applicable requirements such as NQA-1, IEEE, etc.

  • Must have experience with planning, monitoring and execution of nuclear design work with a strong preference for first of a kind (FOAK) designs

  • Must possess a broad understanding of the various engineering disciplines and how they interrelate in the design of a nuclear power plant

  • Experience in interactions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or Department of Energy regulator a plus

  • Experience with design integration activities such as nuclear design procedures/guides, requirements management, design bases, configuration management, and information management system

  • Excellent writing, presentation and communication skills

Job details

Salary Range Level 14: $213,397 - $289,401

  • Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 - 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary bands. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Washington State.
