Ascend Learning is looking to add a Director of Engineering to our Enterprise Applications team in Leawood, KS. This position facilitates the management and evolution of the Enterprise Applications back-office solutions and services within the IT organization. This individual must maintain highly collaborative partnerships with key business leaders to align solution roadmaps and the delivery of projects with corporate strategy and organizational objectives. This person balances time at a strategic level providing product direction and evaluation, determining investment plans and roadmaps, building and leading a team of talented software engineers to execute on key programs and tasks, and collaborating with peers across the organization to deliver enterprise programs. This position requires someone passionate about technology, finance and accounting. And they must be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of business needs, product road-mapping, project execution, team building, resource management, and risk management.

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as a thought leader by developing a strategy and roadmap for the evolution of Ascend's back-office solutions. Align program priorities in direct support of organizational objectives. Oversee, contribute to, and collaborate with colleagues on the creation of product strategies, roadmaps, and backlogs. Effectively balancing the needs of external/internal customers, business sponsors and the Tech & Ops organization.

  • Lead and develop a high performing team to deliver on strategy through a matrixed team of software engineers, business analysts, quality engineers, and scrum masters to deliver technical projects in support of multiple departments across Ascend. Remove project roadblocks to ensure resources successfully deliver on commitments within budget and on Establish and implement plans to recruit, retain, and grow a world class, diverse engineering team.

  • Lead in an environment driven by agile development practices - turning concepts into MVPs, measuring the business value of work delivered, and adapting based on results.

  • Align program priorities in direct support of organizational objectives. Oversee, contribute to, and collaborate with colleagues on the creation of financial systems' product strategies, roadmaps, and backlogs. Effectively balancing the needs of external/internal customers, business sponsors and the Tech & Ops organization.

  • Communicate and collaborate with executive leadership, development managers, product owners, and engineers to perform appropriate gap analysis; identify, manage and mitigate risks that may impact the planned cost and benefits of products and programs. Provide a high-level of visibility and transparency to senior leadership and other teams.

  • Partner with the CFO, CIO, and the senior leadership team to understand and align planned technology projects to compliment the organization's process evolution and innovation plans. Quickly provide a maturity assessment and plan to support organizational and technology growth.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related work experience in the technology industry (software development, MIS, IT)

  • Advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field highly preferred.

  • 10+ years-experience working within an Enterprise Applications/IT organization with shared applications/services

  • 6+ years-experience working within a Finance organization or directly supporting one is preferred

  • 5+ years of progressive leadership experience. Experience managing onshore and offshore team members.

  • 3+ years of experience leading software development/application management teams

  • Previous experience as a hands-on software engineer

  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP, ImageNow, Softrax, Planful, or similar financial systems highly preferred

  • Experience with HR, ITSM, IAM, integration, order entry, and workforce productivity solutions and services preferred

  • Experience managing an application and program portfolio, preferably including supplier management, financial management, budgeting, and performance management

  • Experience with Agile/Scrum, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFE), SDLC processes highly recommended
