Gardner-Webb University invites applications for the Director of Didactic Education in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies.

This is a university faculty position with academic rank based upon the appointee's academic and experiential qualifications. The individual who will serve in this twelve-month full-time position will work closely with the Director and Associate Director (AD) of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies to oversee all aspects of the Didactic Phase of instruction. This person will also play a leadership role in evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of the curriculum in meeting course outcomes as well as how the curriculum contributes to meeting program outcomes and goals.

Essential Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Develop and modify/maintain the schedule of instruction for each didactic semester.

  • Identify need of visiting faculty and/or adjunct faculty in conjunction with Director and AD.

  • Coordinate the scheduling of program and visiting faculty to fulfill the instructional needs of the curriculum.

  • Direct training of didactic principal faculty to effectively deliver the orientation of visiting lecturers, skills assessors or adjunct faculty.

  • Ensure adjunct faculty members are appropriately oriented to the program mission and goals, their specific teaching responsibilities, program instructional resources, and the learning objectives for which they are responsible.

  • Ensure availability and functionality of instructional resources and medical equipment/supplies used to provide scheduled clinical skills and patient assessment experiences during the didactic year.

  • Provide administrative oversight of student files for didactic academic progression

  • Serve as chairperson for the Didactic Committee and ensure all assigned committee responsibilities are met annually.

  • Provide oversight of didactic curriculum - original design, ongoing review or modification of existing curricula. Verify all policies related to curriculum review and assessment are completed annually. Collaboration with the Director and Executive Committee regarding significant curriculum changes is expected.

  • Delineate course and module director assignments among didactic faculty.

  • Establish the annual didactic calendar of need, faculty course/module assignments, and ongoing assessments.

  • Generate and deliver classroom lectures and clinical skills instruction within the basic medical and clinical science topics for courses/modules assigned.

  • Participate in admissions processes by providing CASPA chart assessment, interviewing candidates, and rendering selection decisions.

  • Participate in activities of state, regional, and national organizations to promote a positive image of the PA concept within academic, lay, and professional communities.

  • Mentor, instruct, and evaluate students within areas of expertise and interest.

  • Mentor and provide oversight to all new didactic faculty, in conjunction with the Director and Associate Director.

  • Represent the Department of Physician Assistant Studies through service on university-level committees.

  • Pursue professional development activities such as clinical practice, scholarly works, or an advanced degree.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

  • Serve as a member of the Executive Committee, and additional programmatic committees as requested by the Director.

  • Ensure compliance of didactic courses with NCCPA PANCE Blueprint topics and ARC-PA standards.

  • Provide effective curriculum mapping of the didactic curriculum.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The individual should have the requirements listed below.

  • A master's or doctoral degree (preferred) from a regionally accredited university in an area appropriate for PA education.

  • If PA: Graduate of an accredited PA program, NCCPA certification, and eligible for a medical license to practice in North Carolina or preferred state of practice.

If physician: Certification by an ABMS or AOA-approved specialty board and licensure as an allopathic or osteopathic physician in the preferred state of practice.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical practice experience.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of PA or medical education experience preferred.

  • Demonstrate of abilities in teaching and curriculum development preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty and administrators.

  • Ability to use computers for organization, word processing, and communication.

  • Enthusiastic about working in a collaborative environment.

  • Self-motivated with refined organizational skills.

  • Previous leadership experience and personnel oversight to guide and mentor didactic faculty preferred.
