Job Title Director of Development Position Purpose

Serving as a senior development officer for New England College, the Director of Development is charged with creating and implementing a comprehensive development plan to engage and solicit alumni, parents, friends, and community members to achieve the fundraising goals for the College. The Director of Development is personally responsible for soliciting and closing major gifts of $50,000 or more. As an Advancement content expert on the College, this position is responsible for educating and collaborating with all campus colleagues regarding funding opportunities for NEC.

Essential Duties Summary

  • In partnership with NEC's Vice President of Advancement and other campus leaders, design and implement a comprehensive development plan to increase philanthropic support for funding priorities established by the President. Focus on strategically identifying, engaging, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts of $50,000 or more, and stewarding major donors to NEC. Achieve annual and campaign development goals. In collaboration with Prospect Management and Research, build, develop and manage a portfolio of up to 125 major gift prospects, with a goal of having 20 or more prospects in the solicitation phase of the donor cycle at any given time. Annually execute at least 100 face-to-face visits and present 15+ proposals, with an expectation of escalating philanthropic goals.

  • Develop effective fundraising strategies in coordination and collaboration with the Vice President of Advancement and other members of the Advancement team. Collaborate with all campus partners including other development officers, the President's office as appropriate, the Office of Communications and Marketing as appropriate, and the Special Events team to achieve annual and campaign development goals.

  • Work collaboratively with members of the NEC community who provide support to the College's development efforts in the areas of communications, partnerships, outreach, and scholarship selection.

  • In partnership with the Vice President, establish annual qualitative and quantitative goals, objectives, and key accountabilities in order to increase donors and dollars raised for the College. Prepare and deliver annual written plans.

  • Assist the VP with identifying and recruiting candidates for the College's board of trustees, as it relates to development efforts.

  • The Director uses data and performance metrics to plan and execute strategies. Ensures accurate records of activities and prospect management, as directed by department protocol using the donor database. Monitors, evaluates, and reports on progress and outcomes obtained against agreed upon goals.

  • Responsible for responding to leadership/major gift leads for follow-up.

  • Serve as a resource for other development staff who manage other prospects by offering prospect strategy counsel as appropriate and supporting other staff in their solicitations as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Master's degree preferred.

Experience

  • 5-7 years of proven success in major gift fundraising

  • Capital campaign experience helpful.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Must have the ability to understand the needs and interests of major gift donors in order to develop and strengthen relationships.

  • Must have and/or develop expertise in planned giving vehicles and techniques, including charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, life insurance, and bequest intentions.

  • Must have MS Office proficiency and CRM donor database experience.

  • Must be able to display verbal and written communication skills that meet the requirements of the position and needs of clients, vendors and community liaisons.

  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and relationship building abilities.

  • Able to prioritize tasks, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines while maintaining strict attention to detail.
