VIEW JOBS 2/21/2021 12:00:00 AM 2021-05-22T00:00 If you're hungry to do sophisticated, data-driven journalism in one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S., we have a job for you at inewsource. inewsource is a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom dedicated to improving lives in the San Diego region through investigative reporting with impact. Whether we're writing about local government, transportation, education, health, taxes or the environment, our journalists work together to deliver stories with precision on the web, radio and TV. Our work has earned more than 100 awards, both locally and nationally, including multiple IRE, Edward R. Murrow and Best in Show awards. We strive for tangible impact with every story, and use our network of online and broadcast partners - including the local PBS, NPR and CBS affiliates - to deliver those projects to an audience of more than 1 million people a week. inewsource is 10 years old, and thanks to a recent major multi-year investment in our future, we are prepared to grow and sustain that growth. We're looking for a data reporter who is first and foremost a journalist - skilled in the craft of reporting, interviewing and researching. The ideal candidate is interested in all kinds of subjects and is bursting with ideas for accountability stories. You will split your time between working on your own stories and collaborating with colleagues on data projects, including data visualizations. The San Diego region of 3.3 million people just north of the border with Mexico is a richly diverse area. If you speak Spanish, that's a big plus. Position Responsibilities: Acquire, create, clean, analyze and maintain all types of databases, including campaign finance, healthcare and the environment. Present that information in a clear and intuitive way, through searchable tables, interactive graphics or maps. Persistently seek documentation, public records and data to add context to reporting. Independently report and write your own stories. Work well on a team, sharing responsibilities and credit. Skills and attributes required: Skilled with at least one data analysis software, such as Excel, SQL, R or Python. Familiar with mapping software and data visualization platforms such as QGIS, Mapbox, Highcharts or Tableau. Experience documenting and fact checking your work. Expertise in accessing primary data and documents. Ability to tell stories in different, compelling ways. Think critically and effectively in a team environment. Clear and concise writing. Helpful assets (not required): Web scraping in Python or other programming languages HTML, CSS and/or Javascript. Familiarity with statistics. Fluency in Spanish or another foreign language. Broadcast experience (not required, but must be willing to learn radio and TV). To be considered for this position, a data analysis test is required. Pay is commensurate with skills and experience. This position comes with medical, dental and vision benefits, a 401k, vacation, holidays and personal days, sick leave and training opportunities. We are an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity. We welcome qualified applicants of all races, ethnicities, physical abilities, genders and sexual orientations.
