Common Ground Solutions is seeking a strategic, passionate, and performance-driven Director of Development to join a nimble and fast-growing non-profit organization dedicated to improving civic engagement and the quality of political discourse. You will plan, direct, and coordinate fundraising from a variety of sources, including individual, corporate, and foundation donors through solicitation, campaigns, planned giving, and other vehicles. The ideal candidate is excited to build a fundraising operation from the ground up and own it going forward.

The Director will be a proven fundraiser, compelling storyteller, and avid relationship builder. You are adept at leveraging traditional donors in the democracy space while thinking creatively about how to cultivate a broader and more inclusive community of donors. You love connecting with people and turning a roomful of strangers into friends. You have a knack for identifying problem solvers who care more about people than political parties, and are a strong manager of new and existing relationships. This position reports to the executive director and has general administrative support from our staff.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Crafting a comprehensive strategy and implementation plan to develop a diverse network of donors who are passionate about our mission;
  • Building a donor pipeline from prospect identification through cultivation, solicitation, and management;
  • Prospecting, writing, and managing grants;
  • Developing general donor-facing marketing materials, with design support from our team;
  • Serving as an external face of CGS at occasional events;
  • Performing other related duties as the need arises and assigned

Please note that Common Ground Solutions is based in Rochester, NY, but that this is a national search, and the position may be remote.


  • A commitment to our mission;
  • A bachelors degree and 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in non-profit fundraising;
  • Experience identifying and stewarding donors, with donor retention in mind;
  • High level of comfort working with executive-level contacts;
  • Superb written, oral, and interpersonal skills and consistently high attention to detail;
  • Experience with the grant writing and submission process;
  • Cultural competency working with diverse donors and community members from across the political spectrum;
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, transparent, and entrepreneurial environment;
  • Experience with donor databases, such as Raisers Edge;
  • Ability to travel occasionally;
  • Experience in the democracy and government reform space a plus.
