Who are we looking for?

We're currently seeking a proven Director of Design to lead our web design team. We typically build websites for small to mid-sized businesses that typically range from $15,000 to $75,000 in total cost. As the Director of Design, you will lead a team of 3-4 designers. Working alongside the Website Team Lead, you will develop and maintain the creative strategy and style for all agency-produced websites.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the design team that delivers web designs for all agency website projects.
  • Drive a sense of urgency in the team to deliver work, emphasizing the use of lean tools and techniques to more rapidly deliver work.
  • Lead, inspire and motivate designers ensuring their growth and success while delivering compelling, consistent, on-brand design solutions.
  • Stay current on design trends, innovations, and technological developments.
  • Receives direction from the Web Team Lead, but is expected to bring ideas and present solutions to issues independently.
  • Ability to build a highly efficient, highly effective team of the best creative and support talent available, including being instrumental in all the hiring, training and developmental aspects of your team.
  • Guide a collaborative approach to design that supports the strategic implementation of the client's brand on their website. Evolve these ideas and concepts into compelling visual solutions, then presenting those ideas, design rationale, and detail to team members and executives.
  • Lead and mentor a team of designers ensuring all work supports client strategies.
  • Manage and coach a team of talented designers while still executing on your own design work.
  • Continually drive and evolve brand standards for the design of our websites.
  • Develop strategies for new mobile and website functionality, efficiency and programs, and actively contribute to planning conversations and decision about functionality, new programs, and design.

Requirements

  • Must have a proven track record of leading a team of designers that did award-winning work.
  • Must have a proven web design process that leads to amazing work and a great client experience.
  • Must have a strong understanding of all web design best practices, including UX and SEO.
  • Must be a continuous learner.
  • A minimum of 5 years of extensive and increasingly responsible graphic design experience in an agency, specifically including website design.
  • Must have experience in an agile, rapidly changing environment.
  • Formal training or experience in design, usability, human-computer interaction and/or media production preferred.
  • 1-3 years of progressively responsible experience in staff management preferred.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and solid working knowledge of CSS, HTML, Photoshop, and Sketch.
  • Excellent knowledge of optimizing web graphics and page structure for best site performance.
  • Strong graphic design and typography skills.
  • Experience in marketing budgeting and outsourced creative vendor management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

The Trust for Public Land creates parks and protects land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come. In Connecticut, the “land for people” mission is improving community wellbeing through parks and open space and connecting people to the outdoors statewide. The Director of Philanthropy for Connecticut (DOP CT) raises 1 million + annually in private funds to support the Connecticut program’s operating and programmatic needs. The DOP CT works closely with Connecticut State Director to shape the philanthropy program, including developing and implementing a robust five- year fundraising plan that demonstrates incremental growth and can support mission delivery statewide. The position’s portfolio has a strong emphasis on individual major gift prospects and donors. In addition, the Director of Philanthropy helps recruit and manage the Connecticut Advisory Board and directs their fundraising efforts. This is an ideal opportunity for a high-performing, motivated philanthropy professional with a love of the outdoors and a penchant for building relationships with people who wish to make positive change in the world.<br />  <br /> <strong>Responsibilities:</strong> <ul> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">In cooperation with the State Director and The Trust for Public Land’s National philanthropy staff, oversees all fundraising activities in the state, with a special emphasis on identification, cultivation, solicitation, and management of individual donors and foundations with a giving capacity $25,000+ annually.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Works with State Director and Advisory Board Chair to sustain existing Advisory Board members, including acting as a liaison with the Board on philanthropy-related activities, and to identify and cultivate new Advisory Board members.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Reports to Senior Director of Philanthropy in New York and partners with New York philanthropy team on philanthropy strategies.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Supervises two direct reports: a Senior Philanthropy Associate and an Institutional Giving Manager.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Works with the Connecticut team to identify and meet program and project operating and capital needs including creating, packaging, and marketing The Trust for Public Land’s programs and projects to individual and institutional prospects, and developing fundraising materials as needed. Develops annual philanthropy action plans, and long-range (3-5 years) fundraising goals.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Manages all donor recognition and donor communications for the State Office, coordinating closely with divisional and national Marketing departments.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Updates and maintains donor tracking records in donor database and generates donor-tracking reports for both individual and institutional donors.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">In coordination with National Philanthropy teams, plans and produces donor-oriented special events.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Maintains a portfolio of approximately 80 donors and prospects, and makes at least 100-120 visits to prospects annually.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">In partnership with the State Director, develops revenue and expense budgets and shares responsibility for meeting or exceeding the annual state philanthropy budget.</li> </ul>  <br />  <strong>Experience, Education and Skills Required:</strong> <ul> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Interest in and commitment to The Trust for Public Land’s mission.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Minimum six years of fundraising experience, including making major gift solicitations.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Knowledge of and experience with Connecticut philanthropic communities.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Experience recruiting and managing volunteer boards, as well as successfully working with volunteers to fundraise.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Management experience required and demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of a team, ensuring close coordination and integration with other staff members.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Self-motivated; able to multi-task with excellent attention to detail and deadlines; and can perform successfully without regular supervision.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with organizational skills.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Computer proficiency with various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Proficiency with complex databases or donor management software a plus.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Entrepreneurial spirit and able to thrive in a small, dynamic, busy office. </li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Ensure ethical compliance with fundraising best practices, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Bachelor’s degree required.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Willingness to work flexible hours.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Willingness to travel occasionally.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Willingness to spend time outdoors during donor cultivation efforts and work events.</li> <li style="padding: 0; margin: 0;" style="padding: 0; margin: 0;">Valid Driver’s license required.</li> </ul>  <br />  <br />  <br /> About The Trust for Public Land<br /> The Trust for Public Land creates parks and protects land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come.
