Purpose

This is an exciting time in the life of the College of Education, ranked among the top 10 best education schools in the country. We seek a dynamic, creative and strategic leader of communications and marketing to join us as we build on the college's strengths, developing and disseminating evidence-based practices that make a real difference for children, schools, and communities. The Director of Communications and Marketing plays an integral role in developing and implementing strategies that promote our efforts and successes, elevate the brand, and highlight how the college prepares educators, researchers and leaders to respond to pressing challenges in education and health. This leader will integrate our three strategic impact areas: advancing equity and eliminating disparities in education and health, attending to place and context and thriving through transitions, as well as our contributions to UT's Change Starts Here 10-year strategic plan, into the brand and into highly targeted communications to all internal and external stakeholders. The Director will continuously evaluate efficacy of strategies, modifying and adapting them as needed in order to continue to strengthen the brand and enhance the local, national and global reputation of the college and its research, programs, and outreach.

Responsibilities

Communications and Content Strategy

  • Develop and implement short- and long-term integrated and targeted communications and content plans that support the marketing strategy and deliver important brand and leadership information and messaging to key constituents, reinforcing our brand position and Reimagine Education strategic plan.

  • Serve as a consultant related to marketing and communications to college leadership team, faculty, alumni, student groups and staff on promotions/advertising, policies, programs, and courses of action related to marketing protocols, news media and public affairs issues.

  • Promote faculty research and expertise through a mix of tactics, including but not limited to, media relations, thought leadership content, and high-touch events.

  • Develop dean, college, and leadership communications for the College of Education community, in partnership with development and program/center leadership.

  • Develop and enhance pipeline for College of Education stories about student and faculty successes, new programs and offerings, college outreach and opportunities to engage.

  • Develop and implement digital strategy and technology/capability roadmap to enable a more cohesive experience for our constituents across digital channels, including the College of Education website and social media, email, etc., supported by a reporting and analytics infrastructure to improve marketing campaign performance.

Marketing and Brand Strategy

  • Collaboratively create, plan, develop and execute short- and long-term integrated marketing strategy for the school's degree programs, department, and centers; and advance the Signature Impact Areas, mission, vision and value.

  • Develop and execute marketing strategy for undergraduate and graduate student recruitment, while influencing perception of the college for prospective and diverse faculty and staff.

  • Use data and metrics to evaluate and adapt strategies to address the evolving needs of the college and its programs.

  • Develop and implement a strong brand strategy and story, aimed at improving brand awareness and reputation.

  • Develop brand-level marketing channels and campaigns, including the College of Education website, social media platforms, and thought leadership events.

Management, Operational Oversight and Collaboration

  • Manage the Marketing and Communications team

  • Report directly to the dean and serve as chief point of contact for department chairs and directors of research units on communications-related issues.

  • Serve as chief College of Education liaison with University of Texas Communications Office and Texas Development Communications Office, including participation on appropriate university-wide committees and task forces to further enhance the college's visibility and reputation throughout the University and beyond.

  • Plan and manage the communication office budget and assets, ensuring that resources are used effectively and based on proper College priorities.

Executive and Strategic Communications

  • Build a strong and trusted partnership with the College of Education dean and senior leadership team, overseeing the development of talking points, institutional statements, community messages, speeches, and other aspects of leadership message delivery, building senior leadership voices as brand ambassadors.

  • In collaboration with the dean, monitor and manage reputational issues and crises and develop action plans and responses in accordance with communications colleagues in the Provost Office and University Marketing and Communications.

  • Serve on the Advancement Team alongside Chief Development Officer and Director of Strategy & External Relations and other key leaders to advise on reputational and advancement matters and integrate external-facing efforts.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in strategic communications, marketing, business, or a related field.

  • Eight or more years of progressive responsibility in strategic communications, integrated marketing, and/or brand management

  • Experience leading digital transformation, building and implementing marketing technology and capabilities to enable digital channels and experiences.

  • Demonstrated skills in using data and analytics to drive decision-making and inform constituent experiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and represent the varied interests of complex, diverse stakeholders, lead through influence and bring people to the table in support of the marketing strategy and agenda.

  • Tenacity in achieving goals with limited resources and operating in a bureaucratic environment/institution.

  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving experience to help prioritize short and long term organizational needs

  • Ability to manage change, navigate ambiguity and drive efficiencies in order to achieve the objectives of the team.

  • Experience orchestrating an evolving set of complex objectives and initiatives and supporting with effective change management.

  • Experience successfully supervising or managing a team

  • Experience working within varied team environments

  • Demonstrated calmness under pressure; not easily discouraged or frustrated by obstacles.

  • Exceptional communication skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in strategic communications, marketing, business, or a related field; 10 or more years of varied marketing and communications experiences, including but not limited to both higher education and industry roles, in complex, matrixed organizations; Budget management experience in fiscally conservative, limited resource situation; Experience working with different people with various backgrounds.

Salary Range

$120,000+ depending on qualifications

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
