What is the Role?

At the very heart of Coney Island Prep's mission, we believe all scholars deserve the opportunity to succeed in the college and career of their choice, yet systemic barriers create pronounced disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes. The role of our Director of College and Career Readiness is central to ensuring our scholars reach college by building the academic, career, and leadership potential of students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. As Director of College and Career Readiness,you're motivated to partner with parents and caregivers, teachers, and school leadership to provide the support and resources high school students need to achieve their goals in and out of the classroom -- and gain admittance to top-tier colleges and universities. Our direct work with students is complemented by collaborations with diverse community partners that address systemic barriers impacting students' holistic progress and success.

The Director of College and Career Readiness will be hired by and report to the Senior Director of Postsecondary Success.

What You'll Be Asked To Do

College Access Team and College Counseling

  • Manage school-based college staff (two Senior College Counselors, one Junior College Counselor, one registrar and school counselor) towards effective guidance on academic programs, scheduling, and diploma-earning for all scholars on their pathway to graduation

  • Work with each College Access Team team member to set clear, measurable, outcome-oriented goals for the year and plan professional development opportunities around those college-aligned goals

  • Guide all scholars and their families through college research, application, acceptance and ensure they ultimately graduate from high school with college options that best fit their personal, social, academic and financial needs

  • Set strategy for and lead engaging, meaningful College and Career Readiness nights for families which are attended by the vast majority of families with scholars in Gr 11 & 12

  • Ensure scholars have excellent non-academic opportunities in high school -- by effectively guiding Junior Counselor strategy for summer opportunities, year-round internships, and liaising with High School leadership and after school program leaders

  • Authentically encourage academic growth in foundational skills such as organization, metacognitive awareness, self-advocacy, cooperative group partnerships, and technology use

  • Drive focus areas on college planning, personal management and leadership, academic skill development, career exploration, and socio-emotional development

  • Design, execute and monitor systems that ensure an efficient and effective college application process

  • Collaborate with the entire Postsecondary Success Team to ensure your impact lasts throughout scholars' college careers and beyond

  • Develop and execute a strategic plan for creating a college-going culture, including planning targeted, strategic college visits aligned to the Gr 9-12 grade scope and sequence

  • Oversee and manage the comprehensive Gr 9-12 College Readiness curriculum

  • Strategically plan by partnering with Alumni Support Team to ensure seamless transition from college decisions to matriculation in the fall

Partnerships

  • Build and maintain personal relationships with colleges and universities in NYC, NYS and beyond, ensuring Coney Island Prep is known by and in relationship with top tier institutions

  • Manage team to build and maintain relationships with colleges and universities, summer programs, and corporate partners to ensure scholars have opportunities for internship and exposure experiences throughout grades 9-12

  • Partner with Princeton Review to ensure that juniors score an average of 1,070 or above on the SATs, including the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections

  • Manage and maintain a relationship with the College Board

High School Leadership and Operations

  • Participate in high school leadership team meetings to ensure college-going culture is seamlessly woven into the fabric of Coney Island Prep High School

  • Oversee seamless communications about, administration of, and score reporting for the PSAT and SAT

  • Support with planning and execution of key High School student events, including Graduation

  • Manage the College Access Team budget

  • Ensure College Access Team is woven into the culture of CIP High School, and that team members collaborate with grade teams and scholars' advisors to ensure scholars receive aligned support in determining college lists, meeting deadlines, and

  • Design and execute high-quality professional development sessions for high school staff that establish and reinforce college-aligned academics and advising across our school

  • A positive, solutions-oriented attitude and drive for excellence

  • Eagerness to work collaboratively as part of a team

  • Professional demeanor and interpersonal skills to foster relationships with vendors, staff, scholars and their families while demonstrating value of diversity and inclusivity

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • At least two years of college advising to low-income, first generation college applicants and their families preferred

  • At least two years of school leadership experience preferred

  • Proven track record of leading all students to high academic achievement

  • Commitment to using data to drive your work

Who are we?

Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. Merging growth, performance, and commitment, the Coney Island Prep community takes its responsibility to prepare scholars for the college and career of their choice very seriously, but not ourselves. We balance our sense of ownership and responsibility with humility and levity and support each other every step of the way. Coney Island Prep currently serves over 1,300 scholars across its four schools, including:

  • 312 scholars in kindergarten - second grade at the lower elementary school
  • 336 scholars in third - fifth grade at the upper elementary school
  • 348 scholars in sixth - eighth grades at the middle school
  • 349 scholars in ninth-twelfth grade at the high school

Benefits and Compensation

  • Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual's skills and experiences relevant to the role. The salary range for this role is from $95,000-$125,000.

  • As a regular full time employee of Coney Island Prep, you will be eligible for benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match and Paid Family Leave.
