Position Summary

Walsh University invites applications for the faculty position of Director of Clinical Education (DCE) within the Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program. This faculty member will be instrumental in maintaining and advancing the clinical education curriculum for our program. We are seeking a dynamic educator who will collaborate with our team to deliver a contemporary entry-level physical therapy curriculum focused on developing leaders in service to meet the needs of society and the profession. Participation in scholarship and service activities to advance the mission and vision of the program and the physical therapy profession will guide the DCE's professional development.

Primary academic responsibilities include the administration of the clinical education program, which includes securing clinical education experiences, building relationships with our clinical education sites and clinical educators, and mentoring, advising and assessing students throughout their clinical education courses. The DCE may also be involved in other teaching responsibilities such as providing instruction and student assessment in clinical specialty areas, health care business management, or community-based health programming, based upon experience. Other responsibilities include course and program assessment, accreditation activities, academic advising, and program and university governance. The faculty member will report to the Chair of the Physical Therapy Program.

The Physical Therapy program is housed within the School of Behavioral and Health Sciences, which includes graduate programs in Occupational Therapy and Counseling and Human Development. We promote collaboration within the School.

The position will be a 12-month full faculty appointment with rank commensurate with experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Effective communication and organizational skills with the ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, including faculty, staff and students within the program and across the university, as well as external stakeholders such as site coordinators of clinical education, clinical instructors and the regional clinical education consortium.

  • Lead an academic clinical education team including an administrative assistant and other core/associated faculty members.

  • Evaluation of students to determine readiness for entry-level clinical education practice.

  • Teach courses, including the clinical education course series, assigned throughout our 12-month program.

  • Professional service with current active membership in a professional society (i.e. APTA).

  • Ability to participate in independent or collaborative scholarly activities including the design, implementation and completion of products with dissemination through presentations or publications.

  • Mentorship of students.

  • Other duties as assigned or required

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

The ideal candidate will possess the following.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be licensed or eligible for physical therapy licensure in the State of Ohio.

  • A minimum of 3 years of clinical rehabilitation experience

  • Two years' experience as a site coordinator of clinical education, clinical instructor and/or experience in teaching, curriculum development and administration as a core faculty in a physical therapy program.

  • A professional degree (BS/MS PT or DPT) combined with an earned or an in-progress terminal academic degree (i.e. DHSc, EdD, PhD or other academic doctorate) or a professional DPT degree and clinical specialization or other advanced credentialing with a willingness to enroll in a terminal academic doctorate.

  • Interest in pursuing grant funding for scholarly interests collaboratively with other faculty.

  • Administrative functions experience related to either clinical practice or academic education.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Existing record of peer-reviewed presentations or publications.

  • A minimum of 5 years of clinical rehabilitation experience.

  • Clinical specialization or expertise in an ABPTS specialty area.

  • Held position as clinical team leader, clinical manager or operations supervisor.

  • Active involvement in the American Physical Therapy Association, one of its Academy's or Sections, and/or a state (Ohio) Physical Therapy Association.

  • Experience in classroom or laboratory instruction with graduate students, particularly physical therapist students.

  • Involvement in professional community development activities.

  • Desired: Clinical or organizational management experience, or earned ABPTS certification in a specialty area

Skills and abilities: (Required)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to correspond effectively with various stakeholders including students, faculty, clinical instructors, and administrators.

  • Strong organizational abilities to oversee and manage clinical placement paperwork, match students to appropriate sites, and ensure necessary requirements are met.

  • Time management and multitasking capabilities to juggle scheduling, site visits, student evaluations, and day-to-day clinical education operations.

  • Ability to resolve issues or conflicts that may arise.

  • Comfortable with technology and capable of learning new platforms and software

  • Interest in pursuing grant funding for scholarly interests.

  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff and faculty. Positive attitude a must.

  • Work environment is primarily indoors.

  • Will require some local and regional travel to clinical sites, conferences, and professional events as needed.
