Position Title: Director of Child Nutrition

Term of Employment: Full-Time; Full Benefits; 12 months

Pay Information: Commensurate on Experience

General Statement of Job

The child nutrition director administers a totally centralized child nutrition program. Through intermediate levels of supervision, the director directs and controls all activities necessary to food service. Considerable judgment is necessary to food service. Considerable judgment is necessary in the interpretation of state and federal guidelines and in devising methods for their application.

Essential Job Functions

  • Knows, understands, and implements the requirements of the child nutrition program.

  • Establishes and assures the quality standards and quantity controls are maintained.

  • Supervises menu planning and development of recipes and portion control.

  • Develops specifications, coordinates bidding, and authorizes purchasing procedures for food production, service, equipment, and facilities.

  • Establishes and supervises the inventory system.

  • Establishes and oversees equipment inventories and needs assessments.

  • Develops specifications and coordinates bidding and purchasing procedures.

  • Plans maintenance and repairs and works with the proper person for implementing changes.

  • Advises and guides school administrators and architects in facility planning.

  • Develops and recommends personnel records.

  • Establishes and maintains personnel records.

  • Participates in hiring, disciplining, and evaluating all child nutrition employees.

  • Develops and recommends personnel policies in agreement with local and state boards.

  • Provides guidance to subordinates in planning and conducting staff meetings and workshops.

  • Establishes and participates in training programs for all personnel.

  • Arranges for personnel training experiences at colleges, community colleges, technical institutes, and allied organizations.

  • Established a sound financial system, evaluates program operations, and prepares an annual budget.

  • Recommends a system of information and collection procedures for free and reduced-price meal costs.

  • Plans, Promotes, and schedules nutrition education activities.

  • Serves as a resource person to teachers, students, and the community.

  • Works with local and state health officials to implement and maintain high standards of sanitation and safety in all schools.

  • Reviews child nutrition programs and develops plans for improvements

  • Develops and formulates policies for child nutrition service.

  • Visits schools to observe and evaluate all food service procedures.

  • Attends school-related meetings and activities as directed by the Executive Director of Operations or superintendent.

  • Attends training seminars offered for school foodservice administrative personnel by the Division of Child Nutrition Services, Department of Public Instruction.

  • Keeps informed by reading professional journals and publications and attends meetings and seminars to update information in various aspects of school food service administration.

  • Performs review and evaluation of food service programs at designated schools to fulfill state requirements.

  • Responsible for "customer service" by answering questions and providing information in a gracious manner to all employees and persons in the private sector

  • Employees are expected to possess interpersonal relationship skills necessary to maintain harmonious work environments.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of food preparation, and standards of sanitation and safety.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of good nutrition.

  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations governing school food service programs.

  • Considerable knowledge of fiscal control and management practices.

  • Considerable knowledge of purchasing procedures.

  • Working knowledge of facility/equipment maintenance procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.

Minimum Training and Experience

Licensing/Certification:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, education in foods and nutrition, Home Economics, or related field preferable

  • Master's degree in Food and Nutrition or related field or Business preferred

  • Certifications, licenses, or registration required by State, County, or Federal government

  • ServSafe Certified

Experience:

  • Twelve (12) years of successful experience in increasing levels of responsibility in school nutrition areas

  • Five (5) years of successful experience as a Child Nutrition Supervisor or Assistant Director

  • Or equilivent combination education and experience

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.

  • Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions.

  • Work occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.

  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities.

  • Must be able to work in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
