Job Title: Director of Career Services & Student Employment

Reports To: Vice President & Dean of Student Life

Job Type: This is a full time, exempt position.

General Description:

This position's main responsibilities include career services for students in all William Woods University programs, on & off-campus employment, and career programming for students. This position oversees all aspects of career services and programming for a variety of student populations. This person will be an active member of the Student Life staff, which works as a team to enhance the out-of-classroom learning experience for all students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Career Services: provide support and development for students.

  • Initiate and maintain positive relationships with potential employers for the purpose of developing full time employment opportunities, networking, career development, and internship opportunities for students.

  • Assist students in developing self-knowledge related to career choice and work interests.

  • Counsel students and alumni regarding individual job-search strategies, review resumes and cover letters, conduct mock interviews, and provide guidance throughout the job search and hiring process.

  • Create and present career-related workshops and programs.

  • Collaborate with Alumni offices and work graduation to insure connection.

  • Collaborate with academic offices to track internship experiences and opportunities.

  • Provide assistance in developing career strategies and effective candidate presentation skills (resume, interview skills, etiquette, etc.).

  • Coordinate and host career development opportunities with Stratregic Partnerships, Partners for Success L.E.A.D. program Series (job fairs/panels, guest interviewers, etc.).

  • Locate and initiate the use of valuable career assessment and online search tools.

  • Select, train, and manage Graduate Assistant.

  • Coordinate process for gathering graduate first destination employment information.

  • Manage Handshake, online career development platform, to continue to market and engage students.

Student Employment: plan and facilitate new and continuing student employment opportunities for students.

  • Work requires excellent communication skills to make contact with a wide variety of College departments and off-campus employers and to mediate problems arising between student employees and their supervisors.

  • Develops jobs on and off campus for students.

  • Initiates, processes and monitors employment and earnings for on and off-campus employment opportunities

  • Assesses student's needs; provides advice and guidance in employment counseling; gradually counsels students more as they matriculate to graduation.

  • Matches employer/student needs with skills and abilities and holds appropriate number of job fairs each academic term.

  • Develops and presents at new student orientation sessions and offers general career sessions during the academic term.

  • Conducts training sessions for supervisors and maintains accuracy of job descriptions and employment levels.

  • Collects and maintains Gainful Employment documentation on students to comply with audit requirements.

  • Develops and updates forms, manuals, orientation packets, student and supervisor handbooks and newsletters, monitors program compliance on the applicable local, State, and federal laws, policies, procedures and regulations.

  • Provides technical assistance on matters related to the Career Services technology programs.

  • Sets priorities for and coordinates the operation of the on-campus and off-campus employment programs.

  • Coordinates with academic departments, alumni, state, and local employers to develop a robust offering of internships and externships to yield an enhanced student experience, inclusive of summer employment.

  • Promotes activities' programs and information that aid in student recruitment and retention.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as resource for students interested in study abroad opportunities.

  • Engage in activities and committee work dedicated to improving the student experience.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, faculty, students, alumni, and potential employers.

  • Ability to process reports from the University's Jenzabar system.

  • Familiarity with Handshake, or similar products, and the Microsoft Office suite preferred.

  • Desire to work with college students, faculty, and staff.

  • Ability to work without constant supervision (self-motivation).

  • Ability to handle more than one task at a time with a strong attention to detail.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor's degree required (master's degree preferred).

  • Must have strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in student life programs and career services are highly desirable.

  • Be willing and able to communicate effectively with current students, prospective students, and parents.

  • Requires active, energetic involvement in a small college environment and a commitment to improving the quality of living and learning on a university campus.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Ability to climb several flights of stairs several times each day.

  • Ability to speak and read English fluently.

  • Ability to hear.

  • Ability to use a computer keyboard.

  • Effective mobility skills required to move about freely and quickly in the office and on campus.

  • Hold a valid Missouri driver license.

Work Schedule:

This is an exempt, 40-hour per week; benefit eligible, 12-month position with evening and/or weekend work as needed.
