The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a Director of Career Services to provide practical and meaningful opportunities for students to develop and attain professional success, as well as promote and maintain alumni engagement to advance the school's strategic goals. The Director will do this by: planning and executing on- and off-site career services programming; providing one-on-one counseling to current students and alumni; developing and maintaining relationships with potential employers, alumni, and other leaders in the public policy arena; and engaging alumni to strengthen programs and provide tangible benefits to the Batten Community. The Director is responsible for developing student and alumni internship and job opportunities and creating meaningful networks of alumni and employers to further this goal.
The Director of Career Services will report to the Senior Assistant Dean of Student and Career Services and will support her/him in accomplishing their responsibilities, goals, and objectives. While the position typically requires 40 hours/week during normal business hours, some evening/weekend work is required, especially during large-scale events. Batten School students and graduates obtain positions locally and at the state, national, and international levels; the Director's efforts should be planned and targeted accordingly. The Director has supervisory responsibility over the Assistant Director of Career Services, a career counselor (when applicable), and seasonal graduate/undergraduate student interns. The Director will represent the Office of Student and Career Services, as needed, at various school, university, and professional events.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Programming and Advising:
Organize and host/present programs to develop students' awareness of and exposure to different careers within the various public policy sectors, including presentations by policy professionals, faculty, and alumni
Arrange career programming for a variety of employment-related topics, from job search skills and strategies to various substantive policy areas of interest
Coordinate with the University Career Center and other UVA career services offices to organize, plan, and execute career development events and programming
Manage summer internship and fellowship application process and serve as advisor of record for MPP summer internship program
Track internship, job, and alumni career-related data, both internally and externally; contribute to design and distribution of annual First Destinations report
Support the use of technology (e.g., Handshake, Salesforce, etc.) to promote and enhance the efficient delivery of student and alumni career-related programs and services
Alumni Engagement:
Plan, implement, and promote alumni professional development programming to support alumni, as well as the school's strategic plan
Establish and build relationships with a wide range of alumni, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; maintain regular communication with alumni via direct contact, email blasts, alumni web pages, and print publications; collaborate with Batten communications team members to communicate with alumni-related audiences
Educate graduating students about alumni benefits and engage them in related programming; collaborate with University alumni partners to better promote related benefits
Partner with the Batten Alumni Advisory Board to promote alumni professional development and programming
Employer Relations:
Organize employer and networking events, including information sessions, career fairs, on- Grounds recruiting opportunities, and on-site employer visits
Recruit and host on-Grounds interviews and related information sessions; promote other on- Grounds interviewing opportunities through the University Career Center
Cultivate and maintain a network of prospective employers and productive organizational relationships
Facilitate student-employer relations, making contacts or referrals as necessary
Batten School Representative and Liaison:
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree, preferably in public policy, education, higher education, law, or counseling
Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in a university student, alumni, or career services and/or professional advising role, ideally supporting candidates seeking public sector/nonprofit positions
Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and strategic/organizational planning experience
Strong customer service orientation, and well well-developed organizational skills
Demonstrated program/workshop development and event coordination experience
Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills
Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office); prior experience with web-based career resources (including social networking sites), and career services management software/technology (e.g., Handshake, Career Shift, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
Programmatic or advising experience related to student leadership development
Experience in federal/state government or with nonprofit policy organizations
Demonstrated experience in alumni engagement and relations
Knowledge and/or certification in the use of personality/career assessment tools (e.g., Myers- Briggs Type Indication, Strong Interest Inventory, etc.)
Ability to teach and instruct in the use of programs, services, and resources in a career-related environment
Anticipated hiring range : $110,000 - $120,000 annually
