Provides overall leadership and administration for the Center for Career & Professional Development, including strategic planning and goal setting, policies and procedures, staff supervision, budget management, risk management, and the development and assessment of programs and services designed to advance student success. Under administrative direction, serves as the principal planning coordinator for university programs, policies, and procedures and the promotion of university opportunities for internship and career readiness. In collaboration with External Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Community Relations, coordinates employer relations and centralized internship processes.

Typical Duties/Job Duties

Leadership and Training

  • Actively participate in strategic planning efforts related to institutionalization of career and professional development and readiness supports for students; Lead University-wide efforts and initiatives to improve career and professional development service-delivery and integrate career and professional development into the curriculum and co-curriculum.

  • Monitor the holistic availability of opportunities and participation in career development for all student populations.

  • Establish strategic goals for the Center for Career & Professional Development, including long-range planning and assessment.

  • Assess historical and current programs and related data for use in creating future programs and initiatives for students and employers.

  • Coordinate and lead career and professional development workshop programming, including outreach, implementation, and evaluation of the workshops for the campus community, employers, and university partners related to career readiness and career development.

  • Participate in division-wide and all-campus events as well as academic and other committee meetings as assigned; Serve on a variety of committees, councils, and advisory groups, represent the Center for Career & Professional Success in meetings, receptions, and other programs.

  • Remain knowledgeable of career and professional development standards in higher education and relevant industry news and information by participating in professional association activities and professional development opportunities, reading industry and trade publications, and maintaining faculty, industry, and employer contacts.

Career Counseling, Programming, and Internships

  • Coach and mentor students on career planning and job searching, including resume reviews (written and video), cover letters, interview preparation, professional communications, while developing the essential and professional skills for career success.

  • Communicate on career and professional development issues individually and in groups through face-to-face, telephone, and virtual appointments as well as through email, and electronic media.

  • Provide guidance on self-assessment, career decision-making and planning, choice of major, internship/job search strategies, résumé and cover letter preparation, networking, interviewing, etiquette, etc.

  • Administration of the University centralized career development technology and job board (Handshake), including training, marketing, outreach, and communications to students, University partners, academic deans and departments about the tool, its features, and use.

  • Manage the team's efforts to guide students to successful post-graduation outcomes through internships, co-ops, experiential learning for full-time employment and further education.

  • Provide centralized support for the ongoing development and implementation of internships and other experiential learning opportunities for students.

Data Collection and Compliance

  • Coordinate efforts to gather, maintain, and report data related to career readiness and employment status.

  • Manage and oversee data collection and tracking of student reporting of career outcomes upon graduation including the ongoing administration of the First Destination Survey (FDS) or other surveys collecting career readiness and employment information from students.

  • Provide communication, reporting, and outreach to University partners, academic deans and departments about FDS findings and implications.

  • Collect data regarding internship and job placement activities including tracking of participating students and companies.

  • Maintain a list of opportunities and report on student participation in internships, co-ops, field experience, and/or practicums.

  • Maintain and provide assessment data to appropriate ASU personnel in support of university, state, or federal requirements on career trending data, including but not limited to utilization data, post-graduation tracking, employment rates/trends, assisting with Gainful Employment Regulation reporting, etc.

  • Audit records maintenance and management to ensure confidentiality and compliance with University and departmental policies.

Management and Supervision

  • Provide strategic leadership to professional staff and graduate assistants in implementing and administering a comprehensive career development program.

  • Establish job standards for subordinate staff and effectively evaluate staff under charge.

  • Oversees and manages all services and programming provided by the Center for Career & Professional Success.

  • Manage annual budget and reporting.

  • Manage and review office publications, including oversite of webpage materials and other online resources.

  • Establish office policies and procedures.

  • Support Center for Career & Professional Development staff in identifying challenges or barriers that might hinder employability, and assist staff in identifying services, supports, or referrals to community resources.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Collaborative Partnerships

  • Develop and implement collaborative partnerships to support career readiness of students.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key administrators, alumni relations, university departments, faculty, staff, student leaders/organizations, employers and other constituents to encourage involvement in career development services/programs.

  • Seek collaboration across the university and within the community.

  • Develop, facilitate, implement, and support new programs and initiatives that will expand and enhance current retention efforts across campus.

  • Promote employment and professional development opportunities to academic departments and other university constituents.

  • Respond to outreach requests from the campus community.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with key campus constituents and community partners in an effort to develop and grow recruiting efforts by employers.

  • Maintain high level engagement and concierge services for employers participating in specialized programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills as typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree and 3-5 years of related professional experience including: career/academic advising, business operations, communications/marketing, or recruiting.

  • Strong relationship building, supervisory, program management, event planning, problem-solving and both oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to develop and facilitate workshops, training and/or presentations.

  • Proven presentation skills and comfort level in dealing with the business, public sector and academic communities as well as specific populations including students, alumni, faculty, parents and employers.

  • Ability to develop and manage budgets.

  • Knowledge of national trends in career services and the job market.

  • Understanding and appreciation of the growing role technology plays in delivery of career services.

  • Strong technical skills: database management and familiarity with web-based recruiting software (Handshake preferred), client management systems, Microsoft Office (including excel) and online resources. Expertise in social media such as LinkedIn, X, and blogs.

  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours for special programs or events as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, educational administration, counseling, college student personnel, or related field is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business, educational administration, counseling, college student personnel, or related field.

  • Five years of experience in career planning and employment work.
