Position: Director of Career and Professional Development

Department: Norman A. Wiggins School of Law

Status: Full Time

Position Summary:

The Director of Career and Professional Development will assist in the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the office and work closely with the Assistant Dean to develop and execute programs, services, and resources to empower students and recent graduates for professional success. The Director will also lead the design and implementation of innovative outreach strategies to engage a wide range of potential employers within our legal community and be responsible for supervising students and/or administrative staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Employer Outreach and Engagement: Through creating alliances and work opportunities for the benefit of Campbell Law students and studying internal and external data and metrics of current trends in the legal market, the director will help lead the development of employer outreach and engagement strategies that are unique to Campbell Law and be responsible for the implementation of short -term and long-term goals within the Career Center. The director will research and nurture effective relationships with managing partners at law firms, recruiters, in-house counsel, judges, HR professionals and government agencies. The director will assist as needed with job fairs and the exploration and development of new job fair opportunities.

  • Career Coaching: The director will also coach and advise students and recent graduates on their job search needs (cover letter, resume review, interview preparation, etc.), coaching them in making short and long-term career decisions and providing feedback and support. The director will assist in the planning, development and updating of career educational resources, programs, and opportunities to best prepare students for the legal market. The director will schedule one-on-one coaching sessions as well as group coaching sessions and hold general drop-in hours to provide many opportunities to serve the unique needs of our students. The director will also oversee the student reciprocity process.

  • Other duties as assigned: The director will participate in the law school community by serving on select faculty committee meetings and representing Campbell Law and the Career Center at off campus events as well as local and national legal conferences. The director will also assist with signature programming and event planning and execution as well as the creation and implementation of new and innovative Career Center projects throughout the year. The director will work closely with the Assistant Dean in building strong relationships with internal partners in Admissions, Development and Student Life.

Education/Experience:

  • JD from an ABA approved law school preferred.

  • At least 5 years of practice experience or experience working in various legal or law-related career and professional development settings and the relevant skills to coach law students; or, at least 5 years of experience as a career/professional development counselor working with lawyers or working with law students in a higher ed setting, and direct experience designing complex programs and developing employer relationships.

  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms such as Linkedin and Instagram, and comprehensive computer knowledge with Microsoft Suite, Outlook and Symplicity.

  • Legal practice experience in a law firm, government or public interest setting also preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of legal markets, legal processes, hiring trends, court systems, government agencies, inner workings of traditional law offices and in-house legal departments, etc.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with various constituencies including, students, faculty, law school and university administration, lawyers, judges, corporate/business professionals and high-level government officials through both oral and written channels.

  • Superior interpersonal, writing, and proofreading skills.

  • Excellent oral presentation skills and organizational skills.

  • Maintaining strict confidentiality and attention to detail are essential.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Symplicity, Webex, Zoom, etc.or ability to learn new technologies quickly.

  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level university officials and the public.

  • Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.

  • Exercise independent judgment in complex and new situations.

  • Travel is a necessity of this position including overnight travel.

  • Ability to work extended hours including weekends and holidays.

  • Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet strict deadlines.

  • Detail-oriented and willing to work in a changing environment.

  • Broad knowledge of Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines.
