Job Summary:

Join the vibrant and highly skilled Capital Project Delivery (CPD) team responsible for managing University of Wisconsin-Madison's medium to large capital projects with project values of $600,000 and up. Our current workload is at $1.9B and growing.

CPD delivers exceptional customer service to UW-Madison's Schools, Colleges, and Divisions to help them imagine, plan, develop, build, renovate, or replace their academic, research, and other collegiate facilities. A successful Director of Capital Projects candidate will have experience directly supervising personnel within the design and construction industry.

The Director of Capital Projects leads a team of about 20 project managers with 3-4 direct reports who supervise the team responsible for the successful management of quality capital projects ranging from large infrastructure replacements to laboratory renovations to major new academic buildings, auxiliary spaces and more. The Capital Projects team manages projects through design, bidding, and construction.

More about FP&M: The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services.

Responsibilities:

Develops and tracks budget, manages scope, and determines staffing for architecture and engineering projects; and develops documentation for every design phase to ensure efficient use of engineering resources and timely completion of critical capital facilities projects. This individual is also responsible for personnel management.

  • 20% Develops, directs, and implements architectural and engineering project strategies and execution plans
  • 25% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 10% Develops and audits the unit budget and reporting documentation
  • 15% Serves as the unit liaison to internal stakeholder groups providing organizational information to align project objectives with overall strategic plans and initiatives
  • 20% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational and design policies, procedures and guidelines based on project plan and development
  • 5% Ensure regular, accurate project status and performance reviews and reports are provided
  • 5% Identifies opportunities and efficiencies to gain strategic alignment with design and construction of capital projects

  • Minimum of eight (8) years professional experience in the design and construction industry

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience directly supervising personnel

  • Ability to think critically and strategically

  • Ability to coach, encourage, and foster skill development across a team of professionals

Preferred:

  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certification

  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification

Salary:

Minimum $125,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The starting salary for the position is $125,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
