Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 27,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants' rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer). MRNY is a newly unionized workplace, currently negotiating its first Collective Bargaining Agreement.

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more."

Current Opening:

Make the Road New York seeks an experienced and energetic organizer with vision, experience and management skills to serve as Director of Campaigns, supporting a large team of veteran organizers in developing and sustaining major issue campaign activities to achieve respect and dignity for low and moderate income communities, communities of color, and immigrant communities.

The Director of Campaigns will supervise and support campaign leads to transform local, state, and national policy in the areas of economic justice, racial and gender justice, K-12 education, immigration, housing and climate justice. Each of these campaign areas has a campaign support team of lead and field organizers, working to build a large base of active members across five core geographies to move our work. We are seeking an experienced strategist to lead the team. The Director of Campaigns will report to the Deputy Director

Key Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Supervise the campaign leads across our major issue areas and work with each lead to build out campaign goals, campaign strategies, and to execute and track campaign plans;

  • Develop MRNY's campaigning criteria by developing and instituting clear goals, benchmarks, and practices of the art of campaigning;

  • Support the Deputy Director in providing high-level strategic advice to the Strategic Planning Team on campaign and program development that will advance MRNY's core mission;

  • Support the Director of Base Building on program development that will advance MRNY's annual base-building goals;

  • Facilitate coordination of departmental meetings, shared learning spaces, annual retreats and key annual events;

  • Participate in regular meetings of various management bodies that support the growth, organizational development, and professional development of MRNY members and staff;

  • Collaborate closely with coalition partners, elected leaders, and key internal staff. Represent the organization at key external tables, events and in the press;

  • Facilitate coordination between the campaigns team and other MRNY departments including communications, legal, health, development and compliance.

  • Support fundraising by providing reports and materials for foundation and individual donor efforts. Partner with the Deputy Director on big picture budget decisions and strategies.

Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the U.S

  • Required to be fully vaccinated with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior first day of employment.

  • Spanish/English bilingual required;

  • Ability to work flexible days and hours including travel throughout NYS and Washington, DC;

  • Must have a valid driver's license and be comfortable driving passengers in cars and 7 to 15 passenger vans.

  • At least five years of staff management and issue campaign experience with base-building and/or labor organizations;

  • A dedicated commitment to social justice and an understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families

  • Experience with a wide range of campaign approaches, with demonstrated experience running local and statewide legislative campaigns. National campaign experience preferred but not required;

  • Strong management skills, with a proven ability to supervise large, diverse and veteran teams of organizers;

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines;

  • Strong research, writing, and policy analyzing skills;

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • High level of accountability and initiative; needs to be a self-starter and eager to do team work to support the organization as a whole

Salary and Benefits:

MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $105,054 to $131,850.
