Position Summary

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's primary purpose is to provide excellent clinical care by promoting excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, educate medical students, train future pathologists and clinical PhDs through residency and fellowship programs, and engage in world-class research. The pathology faculty/physicians in partnership with McLendon Clinical Laboratories provide clinical care primarily to the patients of UNC Health at the UNC Medical Center, as well as other UNC Health affiliate sites across the state.

The Department has an established four-year ACGME Residency Program that trains a total of 16 residents annually. The Department also has 11 different one- and multi-year subspecialty clinical fellowships. The Department's nationally renowned research efforts include individual projects spanning the breath of biomedical sciences but are especially focused on molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular disease, blood coagulation, and cancer biology.

The Business Operations Manager is responsible for providing operational and administrative leadership for the Department in the areas of contracts management, project management, educational program support, administrative support and communications management. This position will be responsible for and participate in the planning and management activities for the department, including development of the annual budget and high-level budget analysis for multiple funding sources.

This position will also have an important role in strategic planning and clinical business development for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, working closely with our Chair, Vice Chairs, and ACA in executing on various mission-driven strategic initiatives. The Business Manager will oversee the work of several teams including the Administrative Support team, Finance & Accounting team, Education team, and operational staff.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor?s degree in business administration, public administration, or related business area and three years of professional accounting experience, of which at least one is supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to effectively supervise professional, research, and administrative personnel.

  • Must be able to identify new approaches to improve administrative and clinical operations.

  • Must possess the skills to examine, develop, engineer, and recommend financial, administrative, HR, and technological policies and procedures.

  • Must demonstrate a collaborative and adaptable style with strong commitment to a high standard of service.

  • Must possess exceptional communication skills with the ability to tailor communication style to various internal and external partners.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Management-level experience in the full range of administrative and operations functions of an academic clinical department in a higher education and/or healthcare setting.

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret a strategic vision into an operational model is preferred.
