UVA Northern Virginia at the University of Virginia seeks applications for a Director of Business Development to join their team . The Director of Business Development will serve a key role in a fast-moving and changing entrepreneurial organization and will be responsible for establishing and building relationships with interested clients in the Government sector. They will facilitate the development of programs and have knowledge and oversight of instructional design delivery methods. The Northern Virginia initiative is an entrepreneurial unit, and will address a range of innovative, evolving educational opportunities in the Northern Virginia region and beyond. This position will report to the Executive Director.

The Director of Business Development will oversee the development of new business opportunities in the Government sector and relationships for the organization and will be responsible for three functional areas supporting the University's outreach academic program offerings in the Northern Virginia areas: This role will collaborate with faculty and supporting staff members to identify potential clients (priority to federal government but also state/local); develop marketing strategies to attract government and individual enrollments; and help design programs that meet a broad range of learners, from entry-level workers with little to no education up through professional learners. . The Director will prepare business presentations and proposals, meet with prospective clients, and negotiate and finalize contracts. A key responsibility will be to work with a broad range of marketing resources at the University in the development of relevant marketing materials for specific audiences. Responsibilities:

  • Serve as knowledge expert within team to identify programming opportunities within the military and government sectors, including defense agencies, branches of the armed forces, government ministries, and related organizations.

  • Represent UVA | Northern Virginia at targeted events for Military and Government prospective and current clients to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key decision-makers and influencers within target organizations, understanding their unique needs and challenges.

  • Develop and nurture relationships with University faculty, alumni and administrative leaders to position faculty expertise and thought leadership within the context of client needs.

  • In a consultative relationship, and in collaboration with University faculty resources, aid the clients' in the development of an individualized robust portfolio of custom, open-enrollment, and leading-edge technology delivered programs to address client needs.

  • Generate revenue through the establishment of new clients and by securing long-term business relationships.

  • Collaborate with University Partners to identify key targets and prospects.

  • Develop and maintain ongoing client relationships.

  • Adapt and execute functional or departmental business plans and contribute to the development of functional or departmental strategies.

  • Engagement with individual schools to develop new educational programing in response to individual schools' plans, external inquiries, and market research data.

  • Coordinate the development of appropriate marketing materials that promote programs.

  • Plan and execute events that will develop relationships, introduce course offerings and highlight the customizations available to prospective clients.

  • Create and manage a communications strategy with consistent and productive messaging for both current and potential clients.

  • The Director will maintain departmental strategic plans and budget .

  • This position does require the willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline with at least five years of experience . Master's degree and experience in federal government is preferred .

  • Proven ability to understand clients' business strategies and development needs, assess opportunities, mobilize resources to deliver innovative solutions and negotiate sales at the executive level . To include relevant experience in proposal development, negotiation of agreements, and delivery of impact in the Military and Government sector.

  • Experience with government procurement processes, including applying for RFIs, RFPs, and monitoring related government procurement announcements.

  • Demonstrated ability to use marketing and presentation platforms.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross-function team that includes members with diverse academic knowledge and experiences.

  • Capability to analyze and report on sales and campaign metrics.

  • Ability to collect, distill and present market to varied audiences in the Government sector.

  • General working knowledge of executive and employee education.

  • Ability to communicate with various levels of management, faculty and military/government community, including some area of functional/topical expertise , and the ability to engage on business content with senior executives.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proactive with a bias for action and ability to manage to deadlines and budgets.

  • Strong orientation towards client satisfaction and results.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of learning theories, adolescent/adult education, instructional design, outcomes-based assessment in online higher education and best practices in program design (online and in-person).

  • Experience with business management in strategic planning, communication, fiscal responsibilities, and human capital strategies is preferred .

  • Experience on a corporate, nonprofit or association board is a plus.

Physical Demands : This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Anticipated Hiring Range : A base salary of approximately $120K-150K, with a potential bonus based on performance. Base salary will be commensurate with candidate's experience and qualifications, with UVA benefits .

This position is located in Northern Virginia and will require in-office presence. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position, operating during regular business hours, but with occasional evenings and weekends required .

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: A base salary of approximately $120K-150K, with a potential bonus based on performance. Base salary will be commensurate with candidate's experience and qualifications.
