The Office of Research, Economic Development and Engagement (REDE) is charged with leading research, economic development, and community engagement for East Carolina University. REDE is responsible for research integrity and compliance, administration, and development activities to grow extramurally sponsored activities across ECU.
In addition, REDE leads technology transfer, innovation, economic and community engagement initiatives including partnerships with public sector agencies, industry, military, and other organizations. The following offices are part of REDE: Research Administration and Compliance, Engaged Research, Research Development, Continuing and Professional Education, Postdoctoral Affairs, Undergraduate Research, Research and Innovation Campus Development, Licensing and Commercialization, National Security and Industry Initiatives, Research Integrity and Compliance, Compliance Monitoring, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the University and Medical Center Institutional Review Board, and the Small Business and Technology Development Center.
Job Duties
The Director of Business, Compliance, & Research Analytics is a leadership role within REDE. This position oversees critical functions related to the University's electronic research administration systems (eRA) and coordination between sponsored projects and compliance.
This role involves providing strategic direction, supervising four staff members, and collaborating with compliance processes. The Director plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficiency, compliance, and effectiveness of research administration. The Director directly participates in the implementation, maintenance, and use of electronic pre-award and compliance systems, as well as other databases and computing resources to ensure efficient, accurate data management and reporting for research administration and sponsored project activity.
The Director maintains and updates system user roles, maintenance tables, e-forms, and data fields as new data needs are identified or as business processes are modified. The Director troubleshoots system operational issues with the vendor and ITCS and documents all solutions and system changes.
The Director maintains systems user manuals, develops and delivers training materials, and serves as the primary end- user support contact. This position represents REDE on various campus-wide IT working groups and committees.
The Data Analytics Team works with and reports through the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Administration and Compliance. The Team provides direct support to the research community at East Carolina University for all technical implementations and administrations of eRA systems, creates data, and creates internal divisional technical reports and tools to support the research infrastructure at ECU.

The Director of Business, Compliance & Research Analytics is the system administrator for the pre-award proposal and award management eRA System (eTRACS an InfoEd system), the COI risk manager system (Divergent system), and the IRB electronic system (ePIRATE a HURON system). The Director maintains and updates system user roles, maintenance tables, e-forms, and data fields as new data requirements are identified or as business processes are modified. The Director troubleshoots system operational issues with the vendor and ITCS and documents all solutions and system changes.
The Director maintains systems user manuals, develops and delivers training materials, and serves as the primary end- user support contact. The Director oversees and provides technical assistance and guidance for all eRA system implementations and cross-trains REDE DataTeam members to provide backup for all eRA systems.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree and 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is required.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Master's degree
4(+) years of experience in research administration in a central office or large departmental unit in a not-for-profit higher education environment.
Working knowledge of research administration operations, sponsor and governmental policies and regulations related to the conduct of research and sponsored projects and research administration business processes and best practices.
Experience using electronic research administration (eRA) system(s). Experience in information system implementation and/or management. Working knowledge of Banner Finance for sponsored project accounting.
Experience in using large relational databases and SQL (Structured Query Language) compliant tools to create reports and other analytical tools to extract and manipulate data.
Technology competency: ability to utilize hardware and software effectively; superior Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Pro skills; experience with data analysis; strong technical troubleshooting skills.
Demonstrated ability to:
Generate, analyze and interpret data; analyze and interpret processes and needs based on limited information; and define problems, make recommendations, and implement solutions.
Effectively plan, prioritize and execute tasks in a demanding environment while maintaining a focus on user needs.
