Overview

In partnership with the Inpatient Vice President of Nursing, directs, coordinates and evaluates inpatient clinical operations and is responsible for the operational management of the adult inpatient units, and related programs. Works collaboratively with leadership and oversees clinical and ancillary staff to ensure the provision of quality patient care.

Ensures that all clinical activities comply with budgetary, hospital, regulatory and accreditation requirements. Responsible for planning, organization, and administration of nursing operations to include staffing, training, and documentation to maintain the highest quality patient care standards.

Responsibilities

Directs clinical and administrative operations including oversight of development and implementation of plans, operations, and programs within assigned or across adult clinical service lines. Collaborates with administrative and medical leadership in designated service lines, providing shared accountability and leadership.

Ensures achievement of safe, high quality, and cost effective care for patients within established facility guidelines and philosophies. In collaboration with Administrative and Physician partners, is responsible for the quality of patient care and fiscal management of operations & staffing of designated areas. Provides leadership and direction by recruiting, developing, retaining, and recognizing professional staff through the advancement of continuous learning and improvement of nursing services.

Ensures succession plans are developed for high potential talent. Initiates and maintains effective physician/care team relations, providing superior problem-solving skills in a collaborative, team-based approach. Evaluates patient/staff/physician engagement.

Reviews patient satisfaction data and comments monthly and shares with team members. Implements activities to improve the patient and family experience in the inpatient setting. Addresses any complaints or concerns in a timely manner.

Reviews team member satisfaction and engagement data annually and implements activities to improve engagement.

Rounds with all staff regularly. Rewards and recognizes team members based on recommendations from coworkers, rounding and comments noted in patient satisfaction surveys.

Evaluates turnover risks and implements strategies to reduce turnover. Develops operational/business plan for their designated areas and oversee its implementation in alignment with overall system strategic goals. Establishes departmental direction consistent with health system objectives.

Assures effective communication and coordination of initiatives among various councils, the nursing infrastructure and other health system medical staff committee councils, and work groups. Leads within the framework of shared governance/distributed decision-making, empowering nurses to make decisions regarding nursing practice issues. Collaborates with the Nursing Financial Analysis to coordinate the resource needs for areas of responsibility, including reviewing and approving budgetary recommendations for areas of responsibility.

Balances quality and cost in making decisions on how resources are utilized and budgeted Serves as a role model and resource for professional colleagues. Participates in leadership activities such as committees, professional organizations, publishing, teaching, and research. Remains current with local trends and changes in nursing professional/ practice in health environment.

Ensures that department/staff meet TJC, Board of Nursing, and other regulatory/licensure requirements. Professionally represents, supports, and covers for the Inpatient Vice President of Nursing. Consistently reviews and make recommendations on policy issues in order to align with the organizational and strategic direction.

Has authority to approve policies within adult inpatient care. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from accredited institutions required.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) required and Master's in Nursing, Health Care Administration or related healthcare field required.

  • PhD, or Doctorate of Nursing Practice strongly preferred.

  • Direct patient care experience required with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible management experience in nursing required.

  • Continuing professional education with membership and participation in organizations such as the American Organization for Nurse Executives (AONE) or The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) is highly desirable.

  • Lean or Six Sigma certification preferred.

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • Licensed Registered Nurse with NH eligibility

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate required.
