Summary

The Director of Accounting is responsible for leading the general, technical, external, and capital asset accounting functions at Carhartt. This role includes managing the global monthly, quarterly, and annual close and financial reporting process. This position is responsible for ensuring accuracy, timeliness and efficiency in financial reporting and will lead the research and analysis of technical accounting pronouncements and ensure reporting compliance. In addition, this role will oversee all financial reporting systems and procedures and will work closely with Finance and Accounting leadership in the analysis and reconciliation of accounts and in development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures and controls.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee all aspects of the general accounting functions including the preparation and distribution of the monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidated corporate financial statements including regional (US, Europe, Mexico, and Canada), business channel financial statements, and detailed department and plant budget to actual statements

  • Lead the technical accounting function for the organization. This includes ensuring the Company is in compliance with all applicable accounting standards, including generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and all other applicable regulatory and legal requirements.

  • Proactively maintain a thorough understanding of new and proposed accounting standards and implications to the Company; Oversee the company-wide implementation of new accounting standards

  • Oversee the capital asset management system and tracking for the Company. This includes the maintenance of capital asset records and corresponding depreciation expense for the Company.

  • Oversee the recording of monthly financial activity and review of various reconciliations and calculations on a monthly and quarterly basis

  • Research and analyze technical accounting matters impacting the organization including advising management on implications and preparing position papers supporting conclusions reached

  • Develop, maintain and enhance necessary documentation related to internal controls, financial procedures and financial and management reporting policies and processes

  • Manage and coordinates the annual audit with the Company's external auditors

  • Partner with human resources to manage the audit compliance requirements for corporate benefit plans

  • Manage or participate in special projects (e.g., systems analysis; analysis of certain accounts, segments, products, or parts of the Company) as requested

  • Evolve and actualize the vision for the accounting team to ensure capabilities and capacity meet the needs of the business

  • Oversee the individuals or team responsible for the development and maintenance of the financial models and systems underlying the Company's reporting, forecasting and budget system infrastructure. This includes the processing and validation of all data that flows through the reporting information systems and collaborating cross-functionally with the IT department as needed to ensure continued improvement and visibility to reporting and data needs

  • Oversee the organization and maintenance of the chart of accounts to segregate revenues, expenditures, assets and liabilities to facilitate efficient and effective reporting to department managers, executive management, shareholders, taxing authorities and external auditors

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree Required in Accounting/Finance

  • Master's Degree Preferred

Required Skills and Experience

  • Required: Certified Public Accountant

  • 10 or more years accounting experience

  • Fluent in Spanish preferred

  • Extensive SAP experience with strong attention to detail is required

  • Possesses a high degree of accuracy and thoroughness of deliverables

  • Acts with a sense of urgency

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills

  • Proven ability to develop and lead direct reports and effectively collaborate and motivate others

  • Possess strong ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently

  • Dedicated, self-motivated, pro-active and high energy individual with a strong desire to exceed expectations
