Job Overview

Wesley Seminary is seeking a dedicated and experienced Director of Finance and Treasurer who will transition into the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role upon gaining additional experience and completing the CPA certification within 18 months (about 1 and a half years), if necessary. This position is a key part of our leadership team, responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the seminary, ensuring its financial health and sustainability, and providing strategic financial guidance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Management:

  • Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization's mission and goals.

  • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.

  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems in collaboration with the Controller.

  • Prepare and present financial reports to the President and Board of Directors, providing analysis and recommendations as needed.

  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including property tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements.

  • Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and investment advisors.

Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process, working closely with budget managers and other stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets.

  • Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis to the President and Board of Directors.

  • Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term financial planning and decision-making.

Strategic Planning and Leadership:

  • Work closely with the President and senior leaders to develop and implement strategic plans and goals that support the organization's mission and vision.

  • Represent administration on the Finance Committee, collaborating with other committee members to provide strategic financial guidance and support to the organization.

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the Controller and Business Office team.

  • Collaborate with other senior leaders to develop and implement strategies that support the organization's mission and goals.

Board Relations and Reporting:

  • Report on the financial performance of the organization to the Board of Directors, including regular updates on financial performance compared to budget for the seminary's bank{s) of record and Department of Education ratio forecasts.

  • Collaborate with the President and Finance Committee, Investment Committee and Audit Committee to monitor, develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the organization's values and strategic goals.

  • Represent the organization at meetings, providing financial guidance and support as needed.

Property Tax Filing and Compliance:

  • Oversee all property tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring the organization complies with all relevant nonprofit laws and regulations.

  • Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA in progress required, if necessary.

  • At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, with at least 5 years working in or auditing a nonprofit organization.

  • Proven track record of success in financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and compliance.

  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial management principles and practices.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, with a focus on fostering a culture of teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Commitment to the mission and values of Wesley Seminary.

Transition to CFO

The person chosen for this position is expected to complete their CPA certification within 18 months {about 1 and a half years) of taking the role. Upon successful completion of the CPA certification and gaining the necessary experience in the role, the Director of Finance and Treasurer will transition to the Chief Financial Officer {CFO) position, taking on expanded responsibilities and leadership within the seminary.
