Position Goals

The Director of Academic Advisement plans and manages activities related to academic advisement, Guided Pathways to Student Success programming that lead to student retention and completion across all campuses. The Director analyzes the competitive landscape of higher education by developing innovative advisement strategies and optimizing the use of technology. The Director of Academic Advisement also provides effective leadership by supervising, leading, and inspiring a team that collaboratively work together to support all aspects of student affairs, academic advising, and ultimately, student retention/realization while promoting a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Essential Functions

  • Provides leadership in developing and maintaining a learner-centered, case management and culturally responsive advising system for new and continuing students that integrate advising throughout the students' entire college experience.

  • Ensures students' progression toward their educational goal is monitored and that advising staff utilizes various strategies/tools including Student Planning, AdvisorTrac and Early Alert System to address academic persistence, engagement and completion.

  • Works collaboratively with faculty, administrators and other student services staff to ensure success of the college's proactive, guided pathways advising model and the delivery of advising to students.

  • Recommends personnel for hire and supervises academic advisors and other advising support staff. Provides evaluations and performance feedback accordingly and in a timely manner.

  • Utilizes student success data and student development research to inform decisions regarding student learning and advising program outcomes, including assessing outcomes toward continuous improvement.

  • Stays abreast of emerging and current research, advising technology and success strategies to provide intentional advising interactions between students and the advisement center staff through professional development and other training opportunities.

  • Promotes and engages staff in relevant professional development activities to maximize their capacity for success.

  • Assists students with educational, career, personal and social development. Advocates for the advising needs of students that contribute to their successful enrollment, engagement and completion of their educational goal(s).

  • Assists with advising current and prospective students on the college's offerings, academic pathways, prerequisites, programs, procedures and services.

  • Works with appropriate individuals and various departments to maintain accurate, current academic and instructional program information.

  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with external partners to create a seamless, integrated and comprehensive advising system.

  • Oversees the development and management of the advisement center budget.

  • Participates in college-wide decision-making and as a member of the student affairs leadership team to help coordinate services and operations within the division and throughout the campus.

  • Direct and lead staff in the development and implementation of college wide retention strategies, including Early Alert software.

  • Participate in campus-wide events such as Commencement, New Student Orientation, and Open Houses.

  • Work directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic and socio economic backgrounds.

  • Comply with all safety, fire, and smoking regulations.

  • Complete all mandatory compliance and safety training as scheduled by Human Resources.

  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of the College and attends College events and meetings.

  • Performs other duties appropriate to the title and as assigned that support the mission of the College.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student development, counseling or related field from a regionally accredited institution with three years of supervisory experience in student affairs OR a Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, sociology or related field with five years of supervisory experience in student affairs.

  • A minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education.

  • At least 3 years of supervisory experience in student affairs and leading a student service area within a higher education setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of higher education professionals and to build positive working relationships within a campus community and with external partners.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion for both student and employee populations.

  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze and assess data related to student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of departmental budget development and management.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong technical skills and familiarity with Ellucian Colleague/Student Planning, Microsoft Office, and retention software preferred.

  • Experience in a community college setting preferred.

  • Knowledge of Guided Pathways to Student Success programming preferred.

  • Experience integrating the principles of face-to-face, e-advising, individual and group advising experiences into a comprehensive advising program preferred.

  • Experience with resource tools (e.g. career inventories, student interest and motivation assessments or other educational planning tools) to inform and enhance the advising process preferred.

Special Instructions for Applicants

Standard working hours are as follows:

Academic Year (five working days): 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. four days per week, and 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. one day per week

Summer Schedule (four working days): 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. three days per week, and 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. one day per week.
