Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Responsible for developing professional nursing practice through cooperation, collaboration and facilitating nursing research; optimizing clinical practice effectiveness, patient safety and excellent clinical outcomes. Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating education programs at University of Michigan Health

  • Sparrow for patients, nursing staff, and nursing students, participating in development and implementation of continuing nursing education programs; continuous professional advancement by developing the capacity of the Patient Care Services workforce.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Leads, manages and evaluates nursing systems and processes that support clinical practice and nursing's professional development; promotes the development and implementation of research and uses relevant evidence to improve systems of care delivery and clinical practice; optimizes clinical practice effectiveness; coordinates integration of research findings into practice and educational programs.

  • Promotes and facilitates nursing research at UMH-Sparrow Lansing Hospital; may provide leadership for the Nursing Research Council at UMH-Sparrow; collaborates with MSU and other community agencies on nursing research; engages in grant writing as needed; serves as mentor for nurse researchers at UMH-Sparrow; assists with the implementation of evidence based nursing practice; strengthens evidence-based foundation for policies/procedures; develops the capacity of the PCS leadership team and systems within PCS to implement innovation and expedite change; provides leadership for research activities within the department.

  • Provides leadership for elevating nursing practice to affect the highest quality outcomes.

  • Creates opportunities for innovation through patient care delivery models, performance improvement initiatives and research projects.

  • Drives the elevation of practice of nursing to its fullest extent, including the advancement of nursing in national certifications, BSN preparation and top decile outcomes achievement in collaboration with the Director of Education.

  • Applies knowledge of dimensions of patient care service excellence to strategic planning, program/process integration, capacity development and PCS evaluation metrics.

  • Collaborates in developing, measuring and disseminating internal and external benchmarking reports and dashboard data that capture PCS excellence, and drives ongoing performance improvement.

  • Provides leadership for research activities within the department in conjunction with the Center for Innovation and the Nursing Research Council.

  • Oversees the professional development of the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Clinical Nurse Educators (and other emerging roles in nursing) and integration into bedside practice and serves as Chair of the Advanced Practice Forum.

  • Oversees student integration and clinical placements.

  • Oversee the American Heart Training Center.

  • Serves as the Chair of the Editorial Board for NURSE newsletter.

  • Manages the Simulation Lab to enhance clinical learning experiences to promote bedside excellence in new skill acquisition, proficiency testing and high frequency of drills for high reliability standards of practice.

  • Staffs as executive Liaison to various committees: skin care, falls, documentation, patient education, CAUTI, and policies and procedure committees.

  • Utilizes principles of adult learning and instructional design to implement a multifaceted PCS education program curriculum that ensures staff competency, role development and professional development.

  • Provides leadership for continuing education provider unit and programs.

  • Responsible for academic relations with nursing programs, coordinates all affiliation agreements between PCS and schools of nursing. Facilitates nursing student clinical rotations including preceptorships for both BSN and MSN students.

  • Assists with the transition of the student from the academic to the clinical setting through leadership of the Nurse Residency Program and other recruitment efforts.

Job Requirements

General Requirements Current State of Michigan RN license National certification preferred Work Experience Minimum of 5 years of related experience as a CNS or in an advanced practice role. Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience Education MSN, MS, or MN; OR DNP (or DNP in process) Specialized Knowledge and Skills Analytical and statistical skills needed in data interpretation. Excellent written/verbal communication skills, presentation, persuasion and the ability to effectively lead groups.
