SUMMARY:

The Director, New Student and Family Programs will oversee the development of programming to support the successful transition of new undergraduate students to include their parents and family members into our campus community. Through a reimagined orientation, advising and registration experience, a family festival event, and new freshman Lion Camp, the Director works collaboratively with staff, faculty, students, and family members to develop and implement programmatic initiatives designed to build positive relations with and appropriate involvement opportunities for parents and family members of Texas A&M University-Commerce (TAMUC) students. The Director, New Student and Family Programs develops and maintains a variety of resources for new students, parents, and family members including (but not limited to) a website, content on social media platforms, and manages digital communication plans to promote and engage with new incoming students and families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and implements programmatic initiatives resulting in a reimagined orientation, advising, and registration (ROAR) for new incoming undergraduate students and extended orientation sessions.

  • Develops and implements a plan for building relationships and engagement opportunities for parents and family members of Texas A&M University-Commerce students.

  • Manages the Office of New Student and Family programs including strategic planning, assessment, and budget oversight as well as managing and training professional and student staff.

  • Communicates and collaborates with campus and community partners, as well as guide the development of publications and marketing materials.

  • Develops and administers policies and procedures regarding a Family Association while administering all aspects of the program, including member recruitment, enrollment, and recordkeeping.

  • Develops and distributes informational resources for parents and family members which may include a Family Association website, content on social media platforms, the Lion Family Handbook, the new student and family calendar, a family connection blog, and a Navigator e-newsletter.

  • Conducts assessment of all programmatic initiatives to monitor effectiveness and relevance, as well as ensure that goals are met regarding high-impact practices and industry best practices.

  • Maintains current knowledge of A&M-Commerce's academic, recreational, social, extra-curricular, and financial aid and scholarship programs, and communicates this information to prospective students and their parents.

  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in an applicable field from a nationally or regionally accredited institution of higher education

  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Eight (8) years of related experience in new student orientation, admissions, academic advising, or related higher education field is required (internships, graduate assistantships, and practicum experience can be included). Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current trends and best practices in orientation, enrollment management, student support services, and retention with a particular focus on undergraduate students is required. Experience leading college or university-wide collaborative initiatives is required. Supervisory experience including providing guidance and support to student leadership teams is required. Experience in event planning and execution. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely. Ability to communicate information individually, in small groups, or informal large group settings. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Ability to travel between multiple locations for off-site work assignments and to work nights and weekends. Ability to demonstrate strong fiscal responsibility and adherence to university policies and procedures.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

A Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or relevant field from a nationally or regionally accredited institution of higher education is preferred. Knowledge of and familiarity with current trends and best practices in customer service, enrollment management, student support services, and retention is preferred. Working knowledge of student information systems and customer relationship management systems such as Ellucian-Banner and Salesforce/Target X is preferred.
