We are looking for outstanding candidates interested in joining an organization on the move. Our successful candidate is a collaborative and energetic leader with a progressive vision for 21st-century academic health sciences libraries and their roles in the mission of the Institute for Innovative Education (IIE) and the Medical Center (URMC). The director has multifaceted responsibilities and interacts with a wide range of constituencies in an environment of increasing technical, financial, and political complexity.

The director provides dynamic leadership and oversight for Edward G. Miner Library (URMC); Basil G. Bibby Library (Eastman Institute for Oral Health) (EIOH); Williams Health Sciences Library (Highland Hospital) (HH); and the Golisano Children's Hospital Family Resource Library (URMC).

The incumbent demonstrates a strong track record for leading innovative projects and programs; creating and maintaining a motivating environment; building the capacity of an outstanding group of staff; and exhibiting expertise in the areas of learning spaces, technology-intensive services, and outreach.

As a member of the IIE's leadership team, the director reports to the Associate Dean for Innovative Education.


  • Embrace and initiate decision-making regarding the current opportunities and challenges facing 21st-century academic health science libraries.

  • Collaborate in strategic planning and implementation, including the development of annual plans and transformation of library programs, services, and spaces.

  • Facilitate collaboration between medical center libraries and other campus libraries with regard to life sciences services, collections, and special projects.

  • Coach and develop staff.

  • Maintain overall fiscal responsibility for libraries, with combined annual budgets exceeding $5.8 million.

  • Oversee license negotiation with publishers and other vendors to obtain costeffective agreements meeting the needs of the expanding URMC enterprise.

  • Serve as principal spokesperson and representative for the libraries, communicating proactively with internal and external constituencies; locally and nationally.

  • Collaborate with faculty in the development of curricula; teach courses for medical, graduate, and other students in information access and management topics.

  • Develop effective assessment tools, strategies, and programs to continuously monitor and improve services.

  • Set the standard of commitment to service excellence.


  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or other advanced degree in a relevant field, e.g., education, business, public health.

  • Significant professional experience, demonstrating a consistent record of job excellence, initiative, leadership, university service, and professional development.

  • Contributions at the national and/or international levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years in a senior management or leadership role demonstrating increasing responsibility in a technology-intensive library or information-intensive environment.

  • Experience providing leadership for archival or history programs.

  • Contributions at the national and/or international levels.

  • Evidence of leading or being actively engaged in the development of new services or programs.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills across disciplines and staffing groups, including the ability to inspire others to be the best they can be.

  • Strong commitment to diversity and customer service.
