Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Inclusion & Diversity, the Director assumes responsibility for offering guidance, implementing initiatives, organizing programs, making referrals, and conducting training. Their role involves advocating for inclusivity and equity concerning sexual orientation and gender identity. They also lead in organizing and planning LGBTQ+ focused programming. Furthermore, the Director is tasked with fostering partnerships across different divisions including academic affairs, recruitment and retention, student success, and other units within the division of student affairs. Situated within the Center for Student Inclusion and Diversity, the Director plays a pivotal role in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, serving as a focal point for LGBTQ+ student engagement while providing institutional leadership in gender and sexuality matters.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

One year of full-time professional experience in higher education or another organization, specifically working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender programs or communities.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ issues and the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identities and expressions, and other areas of diversity.

Demonstrated ability to work with the LGBTQ community and other diverse populations.

Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, evaluate, and assess programs and services related to LGBTQ communities. Record of strong organizational and administrative experience.

Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.

Effective conflict resolution and mediation experience.

Effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making experience.

Ability to perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree.

Three years of full-time professional experience in higher education LGBTQ programs.

Budget oversight and administrative management experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory.

Experience with peer support/peer education.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to analyze data, evaluate programs and procedures, and interpret information.

Duties & Responsibilities

Training Related:

In partnership with CSID and MASS staff, the Director develops and delivers LGBTQ+ trainings for students, faculty, and staff.

Facilitates Social Justice Dialogues for faculty and staff, contributing to the ongoing efforts to foster an inclusive campus community as outlined in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion's Strategic Directions initiative.

Designs training modules, including Safe Zone Training and Social Justice/Gender Justice Training, for both new and returning Residence Life RA/MA staff.

Collaborates with various community partners such as HR, CMU Police, the Office for Diversity Education, and Enrollment Management to provide social justice trainings and other educational opportunities.

Student Services:

Fosters an environment to successfully house internship opportunities for students from Social Work, Recreation, Public Relations, and Family Studies within the context of LGBTQ Services and the Gender Equity Programs office.

Advises registered student organizations, specifically Transcend; provides support in leadership and identity development and growth opportunities for all students in the organization. Providing guidance to students/student organizations in accordance with best practices to represent students in matters related to the student experience and to further inform services and drive student success.

Serves as a liaison to Residence Life as a representative for the Trans community and on Gender Equity and Gender Justice issues for on campus residents.

Provides information, referrals, advocacy and support to LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff, including the on-going development and maintenance of a resource library; consults with students, faculty, staff and others on LGBTQ issues to promote an inclusive, healthy and safe environment that enhances the educational experience and overall quality of community life.

Provides support and guidance to first-generation college students by creating opportunities to further their academic and co-curricular successes.

Creates programming for campus community to align with Gender Equity goals.

Community/Faculty/Staff Services:

Serves as the main point of contact for on and off campus support service partners.

Provides curriculum review support to faculty interested in creating more inclusive educational experiences for students.

Establishes connections with community partners to ensure that LGBTQ students, particularly those undergoing medical transition, have access to appropriate medical care. This involves collaborating with healthcare providers and organizations to address the specific needs and concerns of transgender students seeking medical transition services.

Programming Related:

Plans, implements and leads programs to increase involvement and to promote social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion among the LGBTQ+ student population and their allies.

Plans, implements and leads programming to promote social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion around gender related issues

Provides a critical social justice lens to programs and educational offerings by the Office of LGBTQ Services and Institutional Diversity.

Works collaboratively with campus partners to design and implement campus-wide programming and initiatives.

Provides leadership in the development, implementation, evaluation and assessment of a diverse and comprehensive range of services and programs, including coordination of educational outreach programs for students, faculty and staff. Plans, moderates, and engages with classroom and residence life lecturers, panels, and resources on LBGTQ and Gender Justice issues.

Administrative Tasks:

Oversees production of materials to raise campus awareness of LGBTQ services and resources and maintains awareness of the needs and quality of life of LGBTQ students, staff and faculty.

In consultation with the Executive Director of Student Inclusion & Diversity, develops the brand and vision for the Office of LGBTQ Services and the Gender Equity Programs Office.

Develops and implements department budget, management of fiscal resources, and supervises undergraduate student staff.

Actively seeks grant, foundation and gift funds in collaboration with the Institutional Diversity unit to enhance programs and services as well as training programs for the institution in regards to LGBTQ and Gender Justice programming.

Explores and identifies best practices to improve the retention of underrepresented and underserved students.

Recruits, hires, and supervises undergraduate and graduate student staff.

Attends professional staff, all-staff, team, and supervisory meetings. Facilitate and plan meetings as assigned.
