The Director, Legal Innovation leads highly complex, large scale, less defined initiatives that are considered game changing innovation ideas and, if successful, have the potential to transform delivery of Legal Services at Liberty. The Director works closely with Senior Business and Legal Leaders to identify, ideate, prioritize, and execute on process and technology solutions.

Initiatives require external partnerships and management of vendors and internal collaboration across Legal practice areas. Through the management of a small team of individual contributors the Director, Legal Innovation proposes ways to solve business issues, create value and innovate to benefit the organization. Manages the research, development, and coordination with cross functional partners, piloting, testing, metrics and continued iterative recommendations for the assigned focus area until the initiative transitions to a full scale launch and is moved into the practice area.

Provides consultation on complex business issues. Manages a dedicated cross functional teams to develop the roadmap and execute specific work streams.

Responsibilities:

  • Identification, pursuit, understanding and analysis of various business / operational and technological issues faced across Legal department groups. Industry knowledge, research and exploration of various technology and legal service (non law firms) vendors that could benefit Home Office Legal groups, Policyholder claims litigation and data/analytical groups.

  • Prioritizing new innovation projects to accelerate delivery of legal services, yet balancing capacity issues, while maintaining the quality of services.

  • Individually contributing and leading key projects, as well as managing other projects through delegation and empowerment.

  • Interacting, coordinating and informing Senior Executive Leadership across Legal department, as it relates to Industry trends as well as project updates.

  • Managing key stakeholders, and implementing change management best practices during execution of vendor and technology projects.

  • Involvement and being apprised of key innovation efforts across Liberty Mutual.

  • Representing Liberty Mutual, Corporate Legal department and LSS in Industry meetings, legal the groups, approved media and other public forums.

  • Support and guide participation of various industry surveys.

  • Lead, guide and manage key Legal Innovation internal events such as Legal Design Challenge and Vendor Showcase events.

  • Collaborate with external and internal resources to lead and manage external events such as Boston Design Challenge.

Bachelors or Masters in science in Computer Science, Engineering, or J.D. with focus on Commercial Contracts, Insurance or Technology. 10+ years of experience with Technology, startups, and process improvements, with background in leading delivery of innovative solutions (from ideation to implementation). Innovation or Start Up background of 5 to 7 years beneficial, with proven industry knowledge and well established network across technology, applications or service providers (non law firms). Current experience applying new and emerging technologies across Legal Industry or Insurance value chain to name a few. Experience in strategic planning and execution.

Must have strong planning, organizational, analytical, decision making and communication skills. Requires leadership experience in managing large cross functional teams and the flexibility to influence people at a variety of levels internally and externally. Able to think strategically, be visionary and execution focused in adapting situations.

Able to take unstructured thinking and develop an approach and execution strategy. Able to identify and take calculated risks by mitigating risk through test and learn. Able to manage presenting constraints and influence across multiple disciplines within a matrix organization and achieve results. Must be able to communicate with executive leadership, develop presentations and manage differing and competing cross functional relationships and priorities.

VIEW JOBS 9/9/2021 12:00:00 AM 2021-12-08T00:00 JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Manager of Legal Technology, the Legal Technology Analyst is responsible for all intermediate processes handled by the Legal Technology Department. This position will work independently, on small to medium sized matters, assist senior team members on large/complex matters, and delegate tasks to the junior members of the team as they support the firm's clients and case teams. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Consult with case teams and senior legal technology team members to assess and support technology needs, and act as junior project manager throughout all stages of the litigation process. * Responsible for the hands-on technical support for litigation workflow tasks such as database creation and maintenance. * Oversee data loading, formatting and delivery by junior team members. * Perform processes to normalize, mass edit or deduplicate data. Overlay existing records in workspace. Design coding layouts, create fields, and advises case team on database design. Run search term reports and prepare electronic documents for case team s review. Export or produce records in a format that meets the project requested delivery specifications. * Work with senior legal technology professionals to manage vendors, assuring deliverables meet requested specifications, and are delivered on schedule and on budget. Oversee data acquisition and delivery to vendors. * Work with senior legal technology professionals to review details on a matter in order to provide case team with optimal technology solutions, such as the use of analytics. Troubleshoot and recommend technical solutions to case team issues. * Utilize Relativity, Concordance, LAW, Microsoft Access, Excel, Adobe, LiveNote, CaseMap, Outlook, Lotus Notes, Sanction, vendor repositories, and editing and conversion tools * Perform Quality Control measures on all processes to ensure incoming and outgoing data files meet project-specific and industry standards. * Maintain chain of custody tracking spreadsheets for data received and loaded for each project. * Communicate, correspond and interact with clients and outside entities under supervision of attorneys and senior litigation technology professionals. * Provide one-on-one or case team training and teach fundamental legal technology classes in attorney and staff training programs. Serve as a mentor to and provide leadership and training for Legal Support Technicians. * Comply with department and firm administrative procedures and policies. * Assist with firm and department projects as needed and perform other work-related duties as assigned. * Responsible for working on client, firm and department related projects for 1600 hours per year with a minimum of 1400 hours being billed to client-related work.
