Overview of the Opportunity

The overall day-to-day role includes serving as a key member of the Employee Relations / HR Operations team, bringing employment law expertise and counsel to the HR function. In this role you will set strategy and drive initiatives based on legal trends, identify key risks, and implement actions to support proactive employee experiences for our employees. You will counsel and advise executives, leaders and human resources team members on complex employee relations issues and co-lead the development and implementation of training initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

Serve as an Employee Relations expert and ambassador of the positive employee relations philosophy, providing counsel and guidance to the HR function and business leaders for complex and escalated issues, such as policy interpretation, performance management, disability management, job eliminations and other terminations, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, or other issues representing significant risk to the organization.

Counsel and advise the HR function, HR leadership and business leaders on the administration of policies and procedures in compliance with specific federal, state and local employment laws including but not limited to the FCRA, FLSA, ADEA, Title VII, ADAAA, FMLA, and NLRA.

Lead the investigation and resolution of complaints of the highest complexity and sensitivity, ensuring investigations are conducted and recommendations are developed in an objective and thorough manner and prepare written reports of fact findings.

This role is also accountable for scoping the external counsel strategy for complex litigation, and acts as the day-to-day vendor manager. In addition, this role will define the internal workers compensation strategy and operations management plan.

Serve as a key link to the General Counsel's office to maintain consistency in approach to employment law matters and to connect for mentoring and broader career planning.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Review employment practices and procedures for effectiveness and compliance; develop and implement recommendations for process, practice and/or policy changes (for example, Alcohol and Drug Policy; Criminal Background Check Policy; Separation from Employment Policy and Process, etc)

  • Identify ER trends within a business unit and collaborate with the broader HR function to identify necessary policy or process modifications.

  • Lead and partner in the development and implementation of training initiatives to improve management capabilities related to effective employee performance management, conflict management and employment compliance practices.

Candidate requirements

  • JD, licensed to practice law

  • Minimum of 10-15 years practicing employment law with some of this experience in a private practice setting.

  • Experience as first-chair in litigation cases, arbitration cases, and/or class-action employment cases

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience practicing employment law in a global corporation

  • Experience in litigation

  • Experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements as first-chair

  • A desire and aptitude to lead, coach, and develop people

  • A record of successfully counseling and advising an HR function and business leaders on policies and procedures as they relate to federal, state, and local employment law.

  • Experience leading investigation of complex and sensitive complaints and delivering appropriate recommendations.

  • A record of driving continuous improvement within the employee relations

  • Experience leading the development and implementation of relevant training initiatives.
