Job Description: UP Health System

Directs the department's activities and resources to achieve departmental and organizational objectives.

Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements/objectives of the organization.

Directs and evaluates departmental operations, including patient care delivery, information technologies, service level determination, and complaint management, to achieve performance and quality control objectives.

Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.

Prepares, monitors, and evaluates departmental budgets, and ensures that the department operates in compliance with allocated funding. Coordinates and directs internal/external audits.

Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth.

Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.

Supervises and delegates department inventory control.

LabOverview:

Hospital Services:

Laboratory services provided to meet the needs ofUPHSM hospital patients (inpatients, emergency department, ambulatory surgery,behavioral health)

Core Lab:

  • Phlebotomy

  • Hematology

  • Chemistry

  • Serology

Transfusion: Provide compatibility testing and product provision to supportoncology, ED, trauma, obstetric, ICU and NICU patients.

Microbiology: Screening for bacterial and viral infections. Work closely with UPHSMInfection Control and Pharmacy in anti-microbial stewardship.

Pathology: Biopsy samples referred for testing and diagnosis. Supports UPHSMSurgical Service Line in providing rapid intraoperative evaluation of samples.

Flow Cytometry: Blood and tissue samples evaluated for evidence of cancer orinfectious disease. Supports Oncology patients.

Cytogenetics: Blood, and tissues evaluated for genetic abnormalities associatedwith cancer and hereditary disease. Section work includes molecular sampleanalysis for evidence of infectious disease. Supports Oncology patients.

Reference Lab Services: UPHSM soliciting andselling lab services to clients and patients:

Reference Lab UPHS Marquette Outpatients (UPHSMOutpatient):

  • UPHSM Clinics: UPHSM Laboratory services all owned clinics and business vs. sending toQuest or LabCorp

Reference Lab Facility Clients (RL FacilityClient):

  • Hospitals: War Memorial/Dickinson, UPHSM takes on their lab work

  • LifePoint Hospitals:Danville/Martinsville/Bell/Portage, UPHSM takes ontheir lab work

  • Other: Health Departments, SNF's, FQHC's

Reference Lab Outreach Outpatient (RL Outpatient):

  • Physician Clinics: Receives outpatient lab samples

  • Other Work: Combination of samples received as outpatient tests.

Blood Donor Center: UPHSM acting as a Red Cross

  • UPHS Marquette: Collect and supply blood to support hospital patient demand

  • Hancock, Sault St. Marie and Iron Mountain: Collect and supply blood to support hospital patient demand forhospitals we sell blood to

  • LifePoint Hospitals:We sell blood to Bell & Portage

  • Hospitals: We sell blood to 10 hospitals across the UP

  • DCI: We sell salvaged plasma and DCI utilizes this to manufacture reagents

CAPAccreditation for Cytogentics; There are over 20 CLIA licenses

  • 13 areincluded on our TJC accreditation; the others are subject to State inspectionwith lab oversight. FDA license and four FDA registrations. We arealso a teaching lab - affiliations with three universities

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology required

  • Master's degree preferred

Required Skills

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Licenses

  • Valid State of Michigan driver license required

Certifications

  • ASCP or equivalent as a Medical Technologist required

Minimum Work Experience

  • 5 years as Medical Technologist required
  • 2 yrs previous leadership or supervisory experience required
  • 5 years of management and administrative experience preferred
