Job Summary

Director, Internal Communications will develop and support the implementation of internal and external communications, priority initiatives and campus-level programs for the System. The Director has leadership of System communications. Role requires excellent strategic planning, project management, team building, negotiating and communications skills. Position reports to the Associate Vice President of Communications.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelors Degree in Journalism, Business or related discipline required; Masters Degree preferred

Licenses/Certifications: (None)

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of corporate communications experience, including eight (8) years of experience leading and managing teams

  • Strategic and operational experience with the ability to align stakeholders and effectively oversee deployment of tools, channels and content to amplify message and achieve share of voice

  • Ability to critically assess and implement necessary changes to team, roles, strategies and programs to drive operational and strategic performance.

  • Ability to manage crises, engaging the right internal and external stakeholders in a clear process.

  • Use of qualitative and quantitative research practices to inform strategy and outcomes.

  • Incorporates external trends, including social issues, and connects to anticipated needs or opportunities.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, leadership, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Executive presence and ability to influence professionals at all levels

  • Proven business results and performance excellence within previous positions.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Manages function / team annual and initiative strategic planning processes, ensuring alignment with department and System goals

  • Provides strategic counsel to System executives and serves as a trusted advisor to department leadership

  • Provides strategic direction, leadership and motivation to team

  • Develops and manages process and policy to enable consistent, effective and efficient team operations

  • Manages team development and implementation of strategies and tactics that meet or exceed defined metrics within their respective areas, such as internal communications, physician or nursing communications, initiative or system priority programs or media relations

  • Continually looks for opportunities to optimize, enhance or evolve programs as needed

  • Tracks and measures communications program and results to monitor effectiveness and acts as needed to ensure achievement of objectives

  • Coordinates with peers across the department to optimize collaboration, insights and engagement

  • Stays abreast of trends, uses insights to continually inform and enhance communications programs

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

  • Supports team development and ongoing engagement to retain talent.

  • Recruits, hires, trains and manages staff

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
