Position Summary

The Director of Internal Communications is responsible for building and managing an internal communications program at Washington University School of Medicine in support of executive leadership and the school's strategic initiatives, priorities, brand and reputation. The person in this role will implement and lead an internal communications strategy that focuses on developing inspiring and engaging communications that inform and motivate faculty, students and staff, with the goal of building community and connections to the school's mission, values and culture. The director is a member of the communications leadership team in WashU Medicine Marketing & Communications and will develop strong working relationships with executive leadership and with communications partners in the school's departments and centers, helping to distribute content assets more effectively and efficiently and align messaging across the school. The director also will build and manage a team of internal communications specialists to support internal communications efforts.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Builds, manages and sustains internal communications program that will establish standards, best practices and processes for internal communications. Formulates and executes strategy for internal communications. Establishes internal communications objectives and strategies to engage and inform internal audiences and build brand reputation. Develops planning calendars and communications plans that detail goals, formats and timing of communications and communications campaigns.

  • Develops, writes, edits and oversees design, production and delivery of communications for a broad internal audience. Coordinates with content providers, subject-area experts, designers, photographers and other colleagues to ensure content that is timely, accurate and meets audience needs. Develops effective procedures for defining and tracking effectiveness of communications and share regular updates on metrics with key stakeholders.

  • Grows, manages and supports an internal communications team.

  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with WashU Medicine executive leadership and communications partners in departments and centers, provides communications advice on messaging and positioning to help build greater awareness, understanding and support for the school's strategic initiatives and priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record in envisioning, developing and implementing successful, strategic internal communications plans based on goals and priorities.

  • Strong knowledge of best-in-class internal communications practices and procedures.

  • Ability to engage and manage the work of others on the team.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Excellent writing, reporting, editing and proofreading skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Familiarity with technology that drives internal communications platforms, with an eye on emerging tools and platforms.

  • Understanding of the essential elements of persuasive, engaging writing, as well as how to optimize communications across different channels (web, newsletter, social media, etc.).

  • Experience in higher education or health care, working with senior leadership.

  • Comfort leading multiple projects simultaneously with ability to prioritize varying deadlines.

  • Creative thinker, with proven ability to generate new ideas.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop collaborative/productive networks and relationships.

  • Proactive, results oriented and detail oriented.

  • Ability to be flexible in a dynamic and changing environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field.

  • Seven to ten years in communications, preferably working in medicine or health care.

Salary Range

$82,500.00 - $145,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
