The Director of Inclusive Organizational Development and Training for the Office of the Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion will join a newly created unit within Boston University focused on aligning the University's stated values regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion to its policies, practices, structures, climate, and culture. The Director of Inclusive Organizational Development and Training will play an essential role in helping to develop organizational capacity and effectiveness across the institution.

The DIODT will be responsible for creating dynamic, comprehensive, and multimodal education and training programs across the University that are responsive to and appropriate for the wide variety of constituents at BU, including faculty, staff, senior academic and administrative leadership, students. The Director's role will be to create an entirely new series of (large-scale and tailored) programs and education platforms specifically focused on providing constituents with the skills, knowledge, and the means by which to effectively operationalize the University's goals regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Further, the Director will work to control quality and content of diversity, equity, and inclusion training across the University with a special eye towards building organizational capacity, ensuring consistency, and deepening integration of material across the University.

The DIODT will also provide proactive and reactive interventions in cases where diversity, equity, and inclusion practices need significant additional development, particularly in academic departments and, when necessary, will work intensively with departments on challenging climate and culture issues.

This role requires the ability to simultaneously work at the department level, synthesizing and tailoring interventions and trainings based on unique qualities within a department and also the ability to work at the macro level, developing large-scale programs and initiatives that can effectively engage a broad range constituents. To that end, the Director must be diplomatic, strategic, highly organized, creative and tactical, visionary, relational, and, fundamentally a facilitator and teacher driven to deliver tangible results in the areas of diversity, equity, and organizational change.

Under the leadership of the University's senior diversity officer, the Director will partner with key stakeholders across the University to ensure that the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Boston University is creating impactful, measurable organizational change.

Further, Responsibilities will include:

  • Working across CRC and MED campuses to develop large- and small-scale education and training programs for faculty, students, and staff;

  • Developing programming such as train-the-trainer meant to create and embed capacity within the schools/colleges (students, staff, and faculty) and in key administrative units;

  • Offering employees and students opportunities to engage in on-going learning on specific topics and potentially gain "certification" within thematic tracks such as: Allies for Inclusion, Global Social Inclusion, Strategic DEI Leadership, and Active Allies Program (LGBTQIA+)

  • Developing or co-developing in partnership with the Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion DEI leadership coaching initiatives;

  • Providing proactive and reactive organizational development interventions in cases where social/cultural diversity, equity, and/or inclusion are at stake, particularly in academic departments;

  • Incentivizing and creating infrastructure for endeavors such as topic- or area-specific reading groups and learning circles; and

  • Partnering with academic and administrative programs and units to develop on-going, unit-specific trainings

Additional responsibilities will include drafting and/or editing written communications; reviewing and revising training guidance and other materials; ensuring consistency, quality and usability in the design of presentations and training materials; and leading, coordinating and/or participating in the design of trainings and outreach events.

The Director will be a key strategic partner in this ongoing work of developing organizational capacity for Diversity and Inclusion and for creating and monitoring assessment mechanisms.

The Director will work as part of a team of individuals within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of the Provost, and across the CRC and MED campuses. And the Director will partner with multiple additional offices, including Human Resources, Schools/Colleges, and administrative units as appropriate. To that end, the Director will provide leadership and serve as a strategic partner to not only a broad range of leaders within other units, but also diversity and inclusion practitioners embedded in the schools/colleges.

Required Skills

  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution.

  • 7+ years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience leading and managing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, preferably in a university setting.

  • Keen understanding of and experience in change management.

  • Experience developing and conducting on-going diversity and inclusion training programs.

  • Superb written and spoken communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including emotional intelligence and diplomacy.

  • Strong facilitation skills.

  • Strong program design skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree, in related field.

  • Experience working in a higher education institution.

  • Experience consulting with internal and external constituents to develop change

  • interventions.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to meet stated objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships.

  • Ability to influence culture and behavior change, collaborate, and work adeptly with University senior executives, managers, and staff members.

  • Experience with managing budgets and fiscal processes.
