Director - IFS Communications, Employee Engagement

In-Flight Service is seeking a strong business leader with proven leadership skills to lead a team of Managers and Program Managers responsible for IFS communications, Employee Programs, Employee Engagement and all change management associated with such activities. This individual will possess a high level of accountability, strong business maturity, proactive organizational skills and drive and ability for achieving results.

The Director of IFS Communications, Employee Programs and Engagement will oversee and have responsibility for the strategic and tactical aspects of IFS communications development and strategy, employee programs and initiatives. The individual in this role will also partner cross-divisionally with senior leaders who have oversight of other divisional employee engagement groups. The successful candidate should possess exceptional leadership and project management skills and have the ability to influence and drive change at all levels of the organization. This position will report to the SVP - In-Flight Service, and will be based in Atlanta.

Primary Functions

Responsible for leading and driving results for a team responsible for employee engagement programs and strategies that support IFS field operations.

Manages the development and execution of IFS communication plans and strategy. Ensures IFS communication strategies are positioned positively and aligned with the IFS message and the Delta brand. Provides direction and support to the IFS Communications Manager to develop and coordinate strategies that enhance employee engagement.

Collaborate with other divisions and departments to ensure all related communications are understood, applicable and relevant to IFS audience.

Overall responsibility for employee engagement programs to include providing leadership support and direction to employee engagement teams. Overall responsibilities include; support for field communication strategy and oversight for 13 IFS bases; leading all change management streams, strategy support to senior leaders and liaisons with other departments in support of corporate directives; developing, implementing and supporting initiatives impacting a division of 20,000+ employees and leaders worldwide.

Works directly with IFS Program Managers to develop avenues for flight attendant involvement and feedback on new initiatives and current programs that affect flight attendant work life. This includes engaging flight attendants' involvement in the development, implementation and evaluation stages of programs and initiatives.

Supports employee engagement inclusive of the IFS Employee Involvement Group. Partners with and supports flight attendants through the participation in committees and other departmental functions.

Oversees the coordination of activities in the completion of the 2018 launch of the new IFS uniforms program.

Liaison in cross divisional meetings and events representing and speaking on behalf of IFS; nurtures strong partnership with Corporate Communications for overlapping initiatives

Responsible for managing the annual team budget for communications, employee programs and employee engagement.

Leads through demonstration of Delta's core values as outlined in Rules of the Road. Promote, prove and uphold the Delta culture through visible, servant leadership.

Communicates a compelling view of the organization's purpose and value in a way that helps others understand the importance and impact of their contributions. Is a strong advocate for others.

Works with team members to develop specific behaviors, skills or knowledge needed to ensure sustained performance and to prepare for success in new responsibilities.

Develops both strategic and tactical plans that create a safety-conscious environment resulting in employee safety and wellbeing.


Bachelor's degree is required, MBA preferred.
10 or more years professional experience; 5-7 years of experience in a leadership position effectively managing and driving for results, or equivalent experience; previous experience within the airline industry is preferred.

Must have the ability to recognize and leverage functional areas of strength and diagnose areas of opportunity; must have proven success developing recommendations for improvement, action plans and playbooks.

Must have demonstrated a strong acumen for organization, timeline preparation and adherence and adaptability within an ever-changing and fluid communications environment. Must be flexible when unplanned, ad hoc situations arise.

Candidate must have strong leadership skills and possess a high level of understanding of IFS systems and processes for communicating corporate and division initiatives and programs.

Possesses the ability to accomplish tasks and achieve results through others.

Broad based background including operational experience, planning, and budgeting. Analytical, planning, and project management skills are required.

Must be a self-starter with strong decision making ability and the ability to work independently and strategically with limited instruction or supervision.

Must be innovative and open to new ideas; must showcase prior ability to encourage innovation within a team and be able to assess appropriately risk/reward proposition associated with new ideas.

Must possess strong written and oral communication skills; able to produce strategic, concise documents, data, and presentations for senior leaders. Must have previous experience effectively coaching others to enhance communication tactics and presentations.

Ability to think strategically and demonstrate sound decision making in a high pressure, time critical environment.

Must possess the ability to motivate and lead a team to achieve desired business results and drive goals to completion.

Must be proficient in use of standard Microsoft Office applications.

Required to support a 24/7 operation; some holiday, weekend and evening work may be required due to nature of the operation.

Some travel is required.

Must be performing satisfactorily in current position.
