Leads the strategic direction and daily operation of benefit programs including welfare, retirement/pension, time off and other employee benefit plans and services.

Takes into account risk and reward when making business decisions, while ensuring that effective and proportionate risk management processes and controls are in place at all times in compliance with relevant policies; as part of corporate governance programs.


  • Leads in the development of benefit strategies, philosophies, policies and programs designed to:

  • provide internal equity

  • incorporate external competitiveness

  • provide employee protection

  • attract and retain talent

  • Ensures compliance of benefit programs with all applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations.

  • Manages the design, development and administration of benefit strategies, policies and programs including.

  • Provides consultative services to management, employees and HR on many diverse benefit requests including interpretation of benefit plans/policies, communication of State and Federal regulations, and assistance with claim disputes.

  • Designs and develops a series of reports that monitor benefit costs, providing executive leaders critical data in understanding trends and budget impacts.

  • Manages the relationship with benefit vendors by;

  • selecting quality, cost effective service providers

  • negotiating contracts

  • establishing audits and controls

  • developing reporting requirements

  • establishing service agreements

  • monitoring costs/billings

  • partnering on cost controls

  • Develops and leads a team of professionals by:

  • Hiring and retaining a qualified professional staff.

  • Establishing performance expectations and driving results.

  • Establishing a vision/strategic direction.

  • Ensures compliance with policies owned by or delegated to this role. Escalation of policy breaches to appropriate levels.

  • Participate in appropriate risk management activities to ensure the timely identification, assessment of material risks and opportunities. Design and implement actions to mitigate risks including reporting and monitoring

  • Manage the content and facilitation of Pension and Benefit Committee.

  • This role also provides HR Liaison support to an assigned business unit by:

  • Consulting with business unit leaders to align the human resources strategy with the business strategy, executing on that strategy and providing broad HR support.

  • Providing consultation and support to business unit leaders related to HR initiatives, policies, and programs.

  • Consulting with business unit leaders to forecast talent needs against workload demands to effectively assist leaders with planning the overall talent strategy.

  • Partnering and providing consultation to business unit leaders regarding organization design and structure.

Coordinates a variety of administrative duties including facilitating, recruiting, hiring, payroll, performance reviews, orientation, benefits, employee counseling, etc. Works closely with store management to ensure maximum employee satisfaction and retention. Updates payroll system. Reporting Relations Accountable and Reports to: District Store Director; Human Resources Supervisor, Director of Human Resources, Vice President of Human Resources Direct Reports: All other store positions and any assigned by District Store Director Primary Duties and Responsibilities * Provides prompt, efficient and friendly service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all employee interactions * Makes an effort to learn employees' names and to address them by name whenever possible. * Answers telephone and email communications promptly and provides friendly, helpful service. * Counsels with store management and employees regarding performance reviews, scheduling, benefits, wages, etc. * Handles investigation, documentation and resolution of employee issues, concerns and conflicts * Manages talent acquisition process, including sourcing, drug testing, interviewing, hiring and onboarding * Coordinates longevity and retention programs * Coordinates the transfer of employees from one store to another. * Attends store management meetings. * Conducts stay and exit interviews. * Ensures all employment practices comply with federal, state and local regulations * Processes payroll and manages adjustments including special pay, missed pay raises, etc. * Prepares employee wage and employment verifications * Acts as Insurance and leave of absence coordinator * Records and follows up on Workers Compensation claims and fills out accident reports both property damage and personal injuries. * Maintains strict adherence to company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress. * Actively participates in ongoing educational opportunities. * Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines. * Reports to work when scheduled and on time. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities * Assists customers by: * escorting them to the products they're looking for * securing products that are out of reach * loading or unloading heavy items * making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests * Performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience * Coordinates quarterly employee meetings * Coordinates store events (Holiday party, Springtime Party, etc.). * Assists in other areas of store as needed. * Performs other job related duties and special projects as required. Education and Experience High school, plus 2-3 years of other schooling (HR and Accounting) and Hy-Vee experience. Six months or less of similar or related work experience Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics * Must have the ability to solve practical problems; variety of variables with limited standardization, and interpret instructions. * Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple projects, goals and deadlines * Ability to do arithmetic and calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. * Must possess the ability to interview, counsel or advise people; evaluate data, compose correspondence. * Capable of compiling and analyzing employment data to guide strategic planning * Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication * Experience with creating a culture of engagement, collaboration and teamwork * Good organization and time management skills Working Conditions This position is occasionally exposed to chemicals/solvents.
