As a member of our Health Economics and Outcomes Research team in the Boston Seaport District, the primary responsibility of this position is to envision, create and communicate compelling evidence supporting the value of Vertex products through each stage of their development and lifecycle. This person must have an entrepreneurial spirit and drive to develop creative solutions to novel problems while managing complexity and ambiguity in a fast-moving, matrixed work environment. This position reports to the Senior Director of Global HEOR.

Required Skills:

  • Subject-matter expert in HEOR able to formulate and lead creative research projects and ensure conduct is technically and scientifically rigorous and reflects best HEOR practices

  • Excellent internal and external collaborator able to effectively lead cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with business and stakeholder needs while managing to timelines and budgets

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including presentation skills; comfortable communicating complex concepts and adapting presentation style to a variety of audiences

  • Able to apply knowledge of US healthcare system, global HTA requirements, and clinical development, to identify evidence gaps and formulate evidence generation strategies

  • Understanding of the legal and regulatory environment of the pharmaceutical industry, with spotless history of compliance and ethical workplace conduct

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PhD, MD, MPH, or PharmD) in a scientific discipline; clinical background should be supplemented with advanced quantitative training demonstrated by an MPH or MS in a relevant field

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, with emphasis on HEOR

  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals demonstrating expertise in HEOR

The opportunity The role of Director Global Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) will specialize in all aspects of health economics modeling, health policy, HTA preparations & submissions. He/she is a key strategic leader within HEOR function in the Global Medical Affairs (GMA) at Arena Pharmaceuticals and will serve as the key member of the HEOR team for the global market including the US. In collaboration with market access, commercial, clinical development team, and various functional teams within the GMA organization, the Director of Global Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) will lead the development of the global cost effectiveness and/or budget impact models with functionalities that meet the requirements of various HTA agencies. In addition, the role will also collaborate with clinical development and regulatory teams to provide HEOR input in the global clinical development programs to ensure all variables needed for economic model development, market access and reimbursement will be fully captured in the Arena sponsored clinical trials. Although reporting to Global HEOR, this role will closely liaise with key stakeholders in Arena Pharmaceuticals regional offices to ensure effective and streamlined communications between global and regional teams. What you'll dive into * Lead the development of global economic models with key functionalities to meet the needs and requirement of various HTA agencies globally (ie., cost-effectiveness (CE) model, cost-benefit analysis, cost-consequence analysis and budget impact models (BIM). * Lead various systematic evidence synthesis such as Network Meta-Analysis (NMA) or Matching Adjusted Indirect Comparison (MAIC) as needed for development of the cost effectiveness models required by various HTA agencies globally. Utilize Cost effectiveness, budget impact, and cost-consequence model(s) to communicate the public health and economic value of the assets. * Lead the development and maintenance of global value dossier (GVD), and adaptation of the GVD to local or regional reimbursement dossier (i.e., AMCP dossier and other reimbursement dossiers) needed globally. Also create and maintain evidence blueprints, and innovative tools. * Lead and contribute to the reimbursement and HTA submission by developing a sound economic argument that will be the main content of economic sections in various reimbursement support dossier. Lead the development of responses to inquiries generated by various HTA agencies regarding the value of Arena's products. * To provide key methodological expertise within HEOR and cross functionally, on various scientific and methodological issues pertaining to economic model development and other relevant topics in the realm of health economics. The successful candidate will also function as a scientific and methodological resource for HEOR team and cross functional team within Arena Pharmaceuticals. * Continuously keeping track on the new development in HTA policies that are generated by various HTA agencies globally. In addition, the successful candidate will also provide continuous updates to the internal cross functional team as applicable. * Generate peer-reviewed publications to communicate study findings in scientific channels, so that the value story for Arena assets is in alignment with the product value strategy. * Effectively and professionally, represent Arena in various scientific meetings to present posters, podium presentation, symposia, workshops and become the primary driver for development and dissemination of various HEOR evidence to support Arena product value (ie., manuscripts) and other value communication tools. What we expect * D, M.D, D.O, R.N, N.P, Dr.PH), and Master's degree (Msc, ScD) in Health Economics, Pharmacoeconomics, decision sciences, health services research, pharmacy administration, psychology, healthcare/data analytics or related fields with 6+ of experience in pharmaceutical industry or PhD in Health Economics, Pharmacoeconomics, decision sciences, or health services research with at least 4+ years experience * Experience in preparing and making submissions to HTA agencies (e.g., NICE, TLV, ICER), development of global value dossiers (GVD), and/or AMCP dossiers in the US (preferred). * Experience in interfacing with external scientific bodies & preference for hands on experience in interacting with reimbursement agencies in the US and/or Ex-US. * Knowledge and/or experience in various types of elicitation of preference based utility, and various methods healthstate utility elicitation or measurement such as time trade off, standard gamble, utility mapping. * Strong methodological and scientific expertise in the development of cost-effectiveness models, cost-benefit analysis, cost-consequence analysis, budget impact models is essential (i.e, decision tree analysis, markov model, monte carlo simulation, probabilitic sensitiviy analysis, etc) * Strong methodological expertise in systematic review of evidence is also essential (i.e., deep understanding of bayesian methodology to conduct Mixed Treatment Comparison (MTC) network meta analysis, bucher's method of indirect comparison, Match Adjusted Indirect Comparison (MAIC) etc.). * Appropriate awareness for the intricacies of global drug development process as well as the various regulatory requirements in various jurisdictions. * Hands-on experience in developing economic models (early and late stage development) to demonstrate the cost effectiveness of health technologies * Methodological knowledge of multivariate modeling, econometrics, experimental study designs, and experience in conducting observational studies (e.g., retrospective claims database analysis, retrospective chart review, prospective observational studies. * Strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, negotiation skills, ability to influence without authority, ability to work cross-functionally, excellent work ethics, and a self-starter who is motivated and able to work independently * The ability to travel approximately 25% domestically and internationally What you'll get * To be a part a growing company and fantastic team passionate about developing novel drug therapies to improve people's lives * Opportunities to learn and contribute creative solutions * Comprehensive health insurance * Matching 401k retirement plan * Paid time off and holidays * Company celebrations Arena celebrates and supports our differences and is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action Workplace.
