We currently seek a Director of Government Relations to develop and implement public affairs strategies, create policy proposals, plan strategic communications, and work with trade organizations and government agencies to advance corporate priorities. This position is located in Washington, D.C.


Develop thorough knowledge of energy solutions industry, structure, trends, and issues to ensure full discovery and understanding of company business objectives and requirements.

Monitor and proactively facilitate Government Relations activities, including public, industry, government, and media relations that involve or impact the Company profile and business objectives.

Organize legislative and executive branch briefings, activities, and communication materials.

Provide internal Government Relations activity reports and status updates on a regular basis.

Coordinate and track Government Relations budget activity and resources.

Ensure compliance with company, industry, and regulatory standards and protocols.

Cultivate positive and effective customer and business relationships.

Perform other duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications:
5-7 years' direct government relations, public affairs, or media representation experience.

Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Communication, or related field. Advanced degree desirable.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of federal government relations rules and regulations.

Comprehensive awareness of executive and legislative branch procedures.

Ability to effectively manage positive and effective business relationships at multiple levels and with a broad range of industry, government agency, and customer participants.

Superior verbal, written, interpersonal, technical, computer, communication and presentation skills.

Excellent organizational, editing, proofreading, condensing, writing, and speech communication skills.

Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and database management applications.

U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status required.

Valid Driver's License in good standing, issued by resident state required.

May be required to pass security clearance investigation.

Some travel required.

The position is responsible for advancing the Company's policy agenda, and involves leading the internal policy setting process, issue analysis, strategic planning, and advocacy at the principal level. Applicant should possess an understanding of a variety of agricultural, health and environmental issues that impact the sustainability of food systems, including policies related to climate, water, land, food production, and energy use. Position serves as the lead government relations advisor to Cargill for Cargill's Animal Nutrition and Bioindustrial businesses and lead lobbyist on energy, environmental, bio-economy, and sustainability issues. The selected candidate will interact daily with senior Business Group, Enterprise, and Corporate Leaders and represent Cargill before a wide range of stakeholders including Members of Congress, White House and other senior executive branch officials, NGOs, IGOs, and trade associations. The position also interacts heavily with Cargill's trade associations, often serving on boards and industry committees, and works closely with Cargill's customer, NGO, and other partners in a fast paced, demanding environment. It requires excellent relationship building and management skills, strong writing skills, and the ability to explain complex subject matter in concise, common language. This role serves as a "registered lobbyist" under federal legal requirements. Principal Accountabilities * 20% Work across Cargill's diverse business portfolio to develop corporate positioning and advocacy strategies to meet Cargill's public policy and business objectives * 10% Manage coalitions and trade association activities from the grassroots level to the most senior leadership in support of company policy objectives * 30% Serve as the lead for government relations and the relationship manager for a group of Cargill's businesses (internal clients) * 40% Direct lobbying of legislative and executive branch officials across the spectrum of leadership, from staff to Members of Congress, Agency Heads, and Department Secretaries - as well as working closely with Embassies and international organizations Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree required, Graduate degree preferred * Minimum 8 years in federal policy, legislative and regulatory affairs * Demonstrated experience with a wide range of agriculture and food supply chain stakeholders, policies and processes * Strong business acumen with an agricultural focus * Strong foresight and critical thinking about agriculture business and customer needs * Comprehensive understanding of the U.S. federal policy development and implementation processes * Strong curiosity, learning capacity and independent decision-maker * Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills * Self-starter and effective problem solver with strong analytic skills * Ability to set priorities in a fast-paced, demanding environment * Ability to quickly step in and support objectives outside of his/her direct business portfolio * Some travel required * Exceptional communication skills required If selected for an interview, you will be required to submit signed copies of your last two performance reviews.
