The primary purpose for this position is to create a holistic and collaborative approach to engaging corporate partners and foundations for the purpose of campus-wide philanthropy, through developing mutually beneficial strategic corporate and foundation partnerships that support the highest priorities of the university while providing demonstratable benefits to the organization and/or foundation.

Essential Job Duties

The Foundation and Corporate Relations Director, reporting to the Vice President of Advancement and External Affairs, would build new and expand current partnerships through the following:

1.Develop relationships with grant funding agencies, foundations, and corporations to match their interests with UM's needs. Research, prepare and solicit funds for these programs;

2.Work with the UM Foundation Board in conjunction with the VP of Advancement and External Affairs to assist with UM Foundation Board Projects;

3.Create a culture of collaboration and proactive information sharing among schools, colleges, and units;

4.Develop interdependent components to effectively define, plan, and implement strategies for integrated partnerships within a unit, school, and across the university. These elements could include:

Collect and analyze previous engagement data

Determine the best path for effective internal distribution of information

Obtain consensus on the end-goal

Clear understanding of which faculty members are interested in partnering with an organization

Identification of a campus leader to champion the partnership

Solicit gifts from identified prospects

5.Partner with the advancement team to identify and build a directory of regional and national corporations and foundations that support strategic priority areas but are currently not engaged with UM. Areas of interest are top employers, top recruiters, large employers in the region, organizations funding peer institutions, etc;

6.Collaborate with internal constituents to utilize an extensive national network of university alumni along with UM governing and advisory boards and career center to leverage relationships and solicit funding;

7.Create a strategic framework for engagement at numerous touchpoints. Uncover ways of expanding existing relationships into new initiatives requiring corporate and foundation funding;

8.Utilize resources for data analysis and mining to create a tiered ranking of current corporate and foundation partners based on multiple variables including giving history, level of engagement, partnership opportunities, possible points of engagement, overall giving to organizations outside of UM, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills;

  • Excels in prospect research and thinking critically to develop donor acquisition strategies; Experience in new business development and account management preferred;

  • Highly self-motivated, organized, and the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and to provide strategic guidance in a collaborative, consultative, and positive manner;

  • Excellent creative problem solving, customer service, and interpersonal skills;

  • Strong strategic planning skills;

  • Proficient in computer-based information systems.

  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic fundraising plans and goals;

  • Knowledge of business and volunteer management practices;

  • Knowledge of best practices in educational fundraising;

  • Commitment to liberal arts education and cultural diversity.

Education and Experience

The educational requirement for this position is: Bachelor's Degree in a related field; a Master's Degree is preferred.
