The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) is seeking a Director for the Transfer Advising Program within the First Year Experience team in the Office of Academic Advising. Reporting to the Associate Dean of First Year Experience, the Director provides strategy, vision, and direction for the onboarding and academic advising of undergraduate transfer students at Stanford to guide them toward academic success as well as to establish in them a sense of belonging at Stanford. The transfer student population at Stanford is widely diverse including (but not limited to) transfers with backgrounds and experience with/in community college, military-affiliation, professional careers, 4-year institutions, athletics, and much more. From admission to graduation, the Director holds a consistent and central leadership role in facilitating the transfer student experience at Stanford.

Key responsibilities include: onboarding, welcoming, and individual advising for each new cohort of transfer students; managing advising and academic progress of all transfer students; and engaging in formal partnership and collaboration with key campus partners, including senior management, on issues significant to and with broad impact on the transfer student experience at Stanford. The Director is a professional academic advisor and has specific knowledge and expertise in advising and supporting transfer students, academic advising, and University policy, requirements, and processes. Using independent judgment and evaluation, the Director uses these skills and knowledge to identity, clarify, and resolve significant, complex, and unique issues related to transfer students and to lead university conversations pertaining to transfer students in creative and effective ways.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide strategic vision, direction, and management of the Transfer Advising Program, including budget.

  • Develop opportunities for transfer student connection to faculty, research, academic departments and programs, resources, and other academic engagement opportunities.

  • Develop, analyze, measure effectiveness and oversee programs and tools for delivery of student services and programs.

  • Oversee transfer academic advising and progress toward the degree, including:

  • Provide individual academic advising to all new transfer students in their first year.

  • Train academic advisors to work effectively with transfers.

  • Partner with the Undergraduate Advising Directors for student-athletes and with the Student Athlete Eligibility Transfer Specialist in the Registrar's Office.

  • Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university, academic and administrative policies.

  • Oversee the onboarding and welcome of new transfer students from admission through the first year, including:

  • Communication with new students and families

  • Online trainings/workshops

  • Partnership with the Registrar's Office for transfer credit evaluation

  • Transfer Visit Day

  • Transfer programming during New Student Orientation

  • Management of student volunteers/staff

  • Establish formal and informal partnerships across campus to:

  • Identify, clarify, and resolve complex, high profile issues impacting transfer students, using expert knowledge of advising and University policy, requiring broad discretion and independent judgment.

  • Review exceptions to university, program or unit policies and procedures, settle grievances. Make recommendations that may impact the unit's academic capabilities.

  • Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures and implement process improvement for organization or program.

  • Identify, manage relationships, and negotiate with internal partners (for example: VPUE units, Academic Departments and Programs, Registrar's Office, Financial Aid Office, Dean of Students Office, Residential Education, Grad Life Office, Share Title IX Office, Career Education) and external partners (other institutions, organizations such as the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, conferences, transfer families).

  • Participate in evaluation and recommendation of technological needs and effectiveness for delivery of student programs and services.

  • Provide leadership as a content expert in advising and the transfer student experience:

  • Represent Academic Advising, VPUE, and/or Stanford at senior level meetings, conferences, and to both internal and external constituents.

  • May manage the direction of internal academic and administrative policy development for programs and operations. May provide expert advice as a senior advisor to the Dean for Academic Advising and/or Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education on programmatic and policy development.

  • May lead high visibility university or unit-wide initiatives and campaigns; develop long-range planning and policy development for transfer students.

  • May Contribute to development efforts in supporting donor relations, stewardship annual reporting.

  • Contribute to the Office of Academic Advising and VPUE:

  • Participate as a member of the First Year Experience Team and support FYE core programs and operations

  • Support Academic Advising programs, responsibilities, and operations such as the Academic Progress Review Board quarterly processes, Advising Practica, Returning Students programming, etc. Participate in leadership roles, as needed.

  • Support VPUE-wide programs and initiatives.

  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks. Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively convey information to students (incoming and continuing), faculty, and staff, including all levels of management.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.

  • Advanced computer skills/expertise, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, as well as relevant computer systems/technology experience.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse student body.

  • Understanding of financial transactions and budget experience.

  • Ability to ensure compliance with legal, financial, and university policies, and external regulations.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience in academic advising in a higher education setting in a complex university environment, and sensitivity to diverse student populations, with knowledge and understanding of the intellectual and social development of college students.

  • Advanced degree

The expected pay range for this position is $114,000 to $135,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
