SCOPE OF POSITION

  • 70% of the job responsibilities will be in the area of University Union, Memorial Auditorium, Academic Quad, and Spiritual Center Operations
  • 15% of the job responsibilities will be in the area of Student Activities & Leadership Development
  • 15% of the job responsibilities will be in the area of Community Engagement & Big Red's Cupboard

PRELIMINARY OVERVIEW

Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Campus Life will assume primary leadership for the Anthony F. Ceddia Union Building (CUB), Memorial Auditorium, Academic Quad and the Cora I. Grove Spiritual Center. The Director will provide leadership to a staff that consists of an Associate Director, one Assistant Director, and Office Manager, 5 graduate assistants, student managers and student workers. This position requires a dedicated and motivated individual who can work autonomously and in a group setting within a fast paced student affairs department. The Director will provide coverage and supervision for evenings and weekends and due to the scope of the department this position requires a great deal of flexibility within the work schedule.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the following Anthony F. Ceddia Union Building Staff:

  • Associate Director for Operations

  • Assistant Director of Campus Life

  • Office Manager

  • 5 Student Life Graduate Assistants (SLGA)

  • Community Engagement

  • Big Red's Cupboard

  • Campus Activities

  • Technical Operations

  • CUB Operations

Student Employees

  • CUB Managers

  • Event & Information Services (EIS) Crew for CUB

  • Entertainment Crew for Game Zone, Red Zone and CUB Programming

  • Project Center Crew

  • Technical & Event Services Crew

Coordinates and implements the following but not limited to:

  • Policies, procedures, forms and documents for all buildings and programs

  • Assessment for all programs, services, learning outcomes, board members and advisors

  • Carrying out all department and assessment initiatives including compiling the 5 year review, set goals for department and evaluate usefulness of services

  • Collaboration and co-sponsorship opportunities with university student groups, departments/offices and affiliates

  • Provide educational and professional development opportunities for department staff

  • Provide leadership in coordinating campus wide programs and activities with the Assistant Director

  • Plan and coordinate collaboration among campus office and student organizations

  • Ensure best practices are utilized in marketing and assessing all campus programming

  • Coordinate large scale programming including but not limited to: Family Day, Homecoming, Breakfast Bingo, etc.

  • Maintain budgets for various programming efforts

  • Oversees and manages the electronic master calendar for all programming efforts to across campus

  • Manages Big Reds Cupboard, including supervision of VISTA, marketing and publicity of cupboard and coordination of donations

  • Coordinates campus/community events through Community Engagement including Children's Fair and Treats No Tricks

  • Responsible for the management of a $300,000+ annual union operating budget

  • Works with the Associate Director and Office Manager to manage all reservations, set-ups, equipment & AV requests for all events and meetings taking place in the Ceddia Union Building (CUB), Memorial Auditorium (MA), Cora I. Grove Spiritual Center (SC) and the Academic Quad

  • Coordinates along with the Associate Director and the Camps & Conferences Office their schedule of events for staffing and set-ups for all summer programs

  • Maintains a relationship with Campus Dining including retail food operations within the building and catering to coordinate logistics for meetings & events

  • Work closely with Physical Plant, including coordination of all projects along with planned maintenance and upkeep of the CUB

  • Works closely with the Environmental Health and Safety Manager and the University Police to provide a safe and secure environment in all buildings overseen by the Director (CUB, MA, SC)

  • Market the union building, auditorium and spiritual center and its programs and services to campus and community members

  • Serve on various University Committees

  • Along with the Office Manager supervise all aspects of the Cora I. Grove Interfaith Chapel and Spiritual Center, Memorial Auditorium, Academic Quad including but not limited to:

  • Reservations, set-ups, technical services, etc.

  • Improvements, maintenance & housekeeping

  • Wedding Coordination for the Spiritual Center

  • Serve as a liaison with the University's Foundation for the Spiritual Center

  • Serve as a liaison with the College of Arts and Sciences for shared responsibility of Memorial Auditorium

  • Work with VPSA to secure funding for repairs, maintenance and projects

  • Works with university leadership to establish and implementing policies and procedures for these areas.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have:

  • Master's Degree;

  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years full time experience since Master's degree, at least half as an assistant/associate director with preference given to student activities/student union.

  • Extensive experience in campus activities, leadership development and supervision of student employees experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Work experience in a college union setting supporting all logistics for meetings & events including set-ups, audio visual equipment, sound & lighting, catering, scheduling, problem solving, etc.

  • Must be a dedicated and driven professional who demonstrates strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, as well as energy, vision, and charisma.

  • Possess the requisite knowledge, experience, education, and skills necessary for success in the position; demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Organized, analytical and detailed-oriented individual capable of performing under a variety of requirements and deadlines.

  • Have proven skills in the areas of student employee staffing and development and be able to recognize and encourage growth and development of student employees.

  • Ability to exercise authority and good judgment, demonstrating exceptional leadership characteristics and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be able to work both independently and as a part of a team environment performing all essential job functions accurately and efficiently with minimal direct supervision, while also cooperating/collaborating with staff at all levels as a member of the University community.

  • Programming knowledge to develop a comprehensive campus activities program in conjunction with the campus programming board, student organizations and department initiatives.

  • Possess the ability to determine priorities specifically in terms of anticipating and reacting to highly complex and confidential situations.

  • Possess a strong sense of personal and professional integrity, exercising tact and diplomacy.

  • Must be willing and able to represent Shippensburg University effectively in situations of significant importance to the present and future successes of the University.

  • Familiar with the major issues present in the realm of higher education as they relate to the College Union and Campus Activities profession.
