Director, Food Safety and Quality Assurance, Greenleaf Foods

The Opportunity:

The Director, Food Safety and Quality Assurance is accountable for the execution of the Food Safety and Quality Management System (FSQMS) at Greenleaf Foods and for driving continuous improvement within Food Safety and Quality (FS&Q) in a fast-paced and demanding environment. Additionally, the Director will support the establishment and maintenance of positive relationships with other functions throughout the organization, regulatory authorities, customers and other external contacts.

Food Safety

Drive execution of and compliance to all food safety programs at assigned plants, including but not limited to:

  • Accountability for compliance of the Food Safety Plan, including the HACCP system, to meet FDA regulations including FSMA (US Food Safety Modernization Act), Canadian regulations including SFCA (Safe Food for Canadians Act) and other regulatory requirements where applicable,
  • Continuous improvement of FS&Q programs to enable adherence to Internal Audit and GFSI / BRC requirements,
  • Oversight and approval of construction control protocols at plant level as they impact FS&Q,
  • Ownership of Pathogen Control programs such as EMP (Environmental Monitoring Program) testing and oversight and review of related Seek & Destroy investigative activities, etc. including trend analysis of results in the manufacturing facilities,
  • Lead the review of the Food Safety and Quality Risk Assessment as a key element of the product development process both at the BC (business case) and LR (launch request) levels,
  • Review and approve all FS&Q risk assessments conducted by the manufacturing facilities within scope,
  • Review, provide feedback to, and approve plant responses to regulatory non-conformances from the FDA, as well as state and local regulatory bodies,
  • Collaborative interaction with other FS&Q Directors and FSQA team members in support of information sharing, program improvements and consistency within all manufacturing facilities and distribution centres across Maple Leaf Foods.

Quality

Drive execution of and compliance to all quality programs and requirements (QMS Quality Management System) at assigned plants, including but not limited to:

  • Adherence to product specifications,
  • Establishing and assuring adherence to QMS governance,
  • Non-food safety related regulatory programs, `
  • Trend Analysis of QMS performance (CQPs, CTQs, etc.) to identify, enable, and support, implementation of process improvements as defined within QMS governance.

Talent Development

  • Lead and develop FSQA teams at assigned plants including succession planning,
  • Utilize the FSQA Competency Model to hire, coach and mentor FSQA team,
  • Provide guidance and direction on training of hourly FSQA and plant staff to assure compliance to Food Safety, Quality and Regulatory Compliance,
  • Participate in recruitment processes, , merit planning, performance and development discussions, setting business objectives, talent review processes, and exit planning (as required).

External Customer

Manage customer requirements, including but not limited to:

  • Oversight of plant BRC certification and compliance,

  • Liaise with Sales to assure delivery of FS&Q expectations as required by the customer within the Greenleaf programs and affected plants.


  • Regular interaction with external customers, Sales and Marketing, Operations, and the Senior Leadership Team as required.

  • Connecting with peers in the industry, related professional associations and interact with applicable regulatory agencies.

  • Work closely with the assigned corporate Operations leads to assure compliance to FS&Q programs.

Work conditions

Onsite Presence at facilities on a routine basis, travel will be commensurate with plant assignments in relation to home base for the Director.

  • Travel in the United States and Canada, at a minimum, is required.

  • Hours vary to meet plant schedules including Sanitation, pre-operative inspection and all shifts of operation.

What you will bring:

  • 5+ years' experience leading teams in the food industry

  • Minimum of 10 years in a regulated food manufacturing industry

  • Minimum 10 years in the Food Safety and Quality management function

  • Bachelor of Science in Meat Science, Food Science, Nutritional Science, Animal Science or other related science degree. Science degrees in other disciplines (e.g. Engineering) will be considered depending upon previous work experience.

  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Level 2-3 Six Sigma certified

  • Manufacturing Excellence understanding and participation

  • Project management experience including demonstrated change management competency

  • Experience in plant-based, bakery and/or prepared meat processing

  • Experience and understanding of Regulatory requirements and compliance (e.g. CFIA, FDA, etc.)

The Program Director is responsible for the complete oversight of the Wound Care Center, to include the following functions: day-to-day center operations, staff management, financial management, quality/performance improvement, and community education. The Program Director is also responsible for maintaining collaborative and consultative client relationships within and outside the hospital organization and for creating effective working relationships between Healogics and the hospital. All Healogics employees must perform their job responsibilities according to all Healogics policies, Hospital policies, as well as to accrediting organizations, federal and state regulation, and to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines, as applicable. Program Director Responsibilities: Manages the Center’s Operations (20%): Oversees the day-to-day management of outpatient clinic(s) and other wound continuum programs, as applicable. Continuously assesses current clinic flows, processes and procedures, identifies areas of improvement, and develops and implements best practices and appropriate changes to improve outcomes, using the company’s resources. Works with hospital and company personnel to ensure availability of adequate resources, supplies, equipment and services. Facilitates the flow of information and maximizes effective communication throughout the program. Prioritizes responsibilities and directs the work of the Center’s clinical staff and non- clinical staff. Collaborates with other health care providers, Wound Care Center Providers, and Medical Director regarding clinic and patient needs. Manages direct reports in conjunction with the company and hospital HR departments. This includes interviewing, hiring, motivating, coaching, counselling, establishing performance expectations, and conducting performance reviews. (5%) Performs Financial Management (10%): Manages and coordinates all aspects of the revenue cycle for Healogics and for the hospital partner, as appropriate. Stays current with reimbursement changes, providing physician and staff updates and education as needed. Reviews key financial reports, identifies key indicator trends and develops plans to implement best practices to ensure fiscal responsibility. Tracks and reports all ancillary revenues generated by the program. Manages costs through appropriate utilization and management of labor and supply. Works with Healogics support team to complete financial reviews and presents results to hospital leadership. Manages Community Education/Marketing functions (40%) Works directly with the hospital and Healogics marketing departments to ensure that the wound care program has established strategic marketing plans and works with the same group and the hospital physician liaison to plan, coordinate, and execute activities directed toward increasing patient referrals to the wound care center(s). Works collaboratively, as part of a multi-functional team, to best determine key target referral sources, and develops a systematic approach to build those customer relationships and increase wound care center referrals. Maintains, monitors and updates the list of Physician Practice(s) within a given radius of the hospital on an ongoing basis. Visits Physician Practices and interacts with key physicians to provide awareness of the Wound Care Center program, using educational marketing materials. Also documents all physician office interactions, as well as the visits with the Physician Practices in the Healogics Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. Communicates on a regular basis with the Area Vice President and the hospital executive sponsor regarding goals, targets, and other relevant referral development information, as needed. Manages Quality/Performance Improvement functions (10%): Implements and manages a continuous Wound Care Center Performance Improvement Program (PIP) and strives to meet Wound Care Center quality indicators. Ensures program is integrated into the partner hospital’s PIP program. Participates in hospital committees as appropriate and ensures timely and accurate documentation in the patient record and outcomes database. Monitors patient, referring physician and customer satisfaction. Ensures that Patient Safety Guidelines are followed, that Healogics employees complete annual compliance requirements, and creates an environment that promotes the escalation of compliance concerns as appropriate. Manages Relationships (15%): Maintains excellent relationship with hospital client and continuously seeks to understand needs, confirm goal alignment and demonstrate value proposition. Identifies the hospital strategic goals and objectives and manages the program to achieve those goals, while remaining compliant with all Healogics operations standards. Works effectively and seamlessly at all levels within the partner hospital. Participates in hospital department/management meetings and actively participates in Hospital communication activities.
