At CoBank, the Director, Financial Planning and Analysis leads the development and maintenance of the bank's three-year business and financial plan and budget. Provides regular forecasts of the bank's financial performance. Supervises a group of financial analysts who support the bank's revenue-generating lending groups. Prepares detailed financial analyses to support recommendations related to strategic, financial and operating decisions. Advises senior management and other bank associates on financial trends and issues impacting performance. Supports performance analysis and measurement at a product, portfolio, division and customer level. Prepares detailed analyses of issues impacting the financial services industry as a whole. Maintains comprehensive databases and computer models.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leads the development of the bank's annual three-year business and financial plan, and projects the bank's future financial position using data gathered from various sources. Analyzes and communicates the key assumptions behind the financial plan. Evaluates proposed strategic decisions.
Creates, conducts and compiles complex financial analyses. Tracks external financial events to determine and monitor their effect on bank financial position, strategic directions, operating characteristics, financial performance, market trends, taxes and other factors.
Leads a group of financial analysts who provide direct support to the bank's lending units. Ensures that support and analysis is accurate and provides insight into performance drivers.
Provides regular, insightful financial forecasts to management and executives to support decision making and effective communication with stakeholders.
Uncovers insights about the financial performance of the bank, and develops recommendations for financial and operating decisions. Determines implications for the bank's overall financial position, and presents findings to management as appropriate.
Collects and analyzes structured and unstructured (financial and business) data to identify and interpret trends or patterns to support business decisions.
Analyzes the bank's operating model and the impact of any recommended changes. Reviews detailed data and assumptions to ensure recommendations are viable and sustainable.
Develops and maintains analytics reporting and processes that provide insight to business performance. Monitors and interprets actual performance compared to budget and prior periods, and presents in-depth analysis and financial information to business line and executive management.
Analyzes business performance at various levels, including by legal entity, lending portfolio, patronage pool, product and customer.
Tracks major financial transactions to determine and monitor their effects on financial position, strategic directions, operating characteristics, financial performance, and market trends.
Acts as liaison representing business or product group needs and the bank's requirements. Responds to inquiries related to business unit or group performance, financial analysis, management accounting, cost allocation methodologies, budgeting, pricing model analysis, profitability accounting and reporting policies, procedures, and practices for the business groups/divisions.
Understands the bank's capital plans and is involved with aspects of capital planning, including potential third-party capital issuances and backing up capital plan subject matter experts.
Maintains comprehensive databases and computer models to simulate the bank's and other financial institutions' balance sheets, and to facilitate financial and business decision-making.
Fosters innovation initiatives and helps identify other areas of application within Finance, including data collection and appropriate analytical tools.
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or relevant discipline.
Ten (10) or more years of financial analysis experience, preferably in financial services or a related industry; or an appropriate combination of education and experience.
Two (2) or more years of management/supervisory experience.
Master's degree, MBA and/or CPA/CFA preferred.
Knowledge of banking trends, and techniques and best practices in budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting of large commercial financial institutions.
Knowledge of financial reporting systems, and experience with combined and/or consolidated financial reporting environments including multiple data sources.
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, and their applications.
Demonstrated ability to effectively research, compile and interpret data from financial information systems and sources, and to turn that analysis into effective presentations and recommendations.
Proven ability to perform complex technical analyses utilizing spreadsheets, database and other personal computer functions.
Excellent problem solving and decision making skills, and the ability to creatively and succinctly present the results of complex research and analysis to impact opinion.
Ability to multi-task, prioritize and deliver on commitments within tight timeframes and competing priorities.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
