Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Superintendent, Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), the SELPA Director develops, creates, and implements policies and procedures for Special Education; provides leadership in Special Education, personnel development, and mediates a culture of responsibility, trust, and cooperation between district staff, families, and community leaders and serves as a resource to assist parents, students, community members and staff with resolving concerns. The SELPA Director advocates for fairness, consistency, and a positive working relationship between parents, students, community, and staff, locally and state-wide.

In a prompt and impartial manner, the SELPA Director clarifies SELPA district members' policies, procedures, and regulations, and assists in the resolution of concerns and critical situations. The work of the SELPA Director provides participants (district staff, families, and community leaders) sources of information in answering questions and assisting in the resolution of concerns when normal procedures have not reached consensus and agreement. Serving as a designated neutral facilitator, the SELPA Director is not an advocate for the district or parents/guardian, but rather, an advocate for fairness who acts as a source of information and referral, and aids in answering an inquirer's questions, and assists in the resolution of concerns of critical situations. The SELPA Director should know how to proceed with issues, and help the inquirer assess who should be involved, at what stage, and ensure that appropriate steps and processes are followed.
