Position Overview

The Director, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) leads a high performing team of EHS professionals to cultivate, promote, and continuously improve Exact Science's EHS culture and related performance globally. This position is responsible for directing and providing EHS programs, oversees the development and implementation of behavior-based safety practices; audits functions for EHS procedure implementation; ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements; and conducts root-cause analysis of EHS incidents. Essential Duties

include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide comprehensive administrative and organizational support for the entire EHS program. Promote, develop, establish, and maintain associated EHS policies and procedures, and provide training as necessary for all employees, visitors, and onsite service providers.

  • Provide necessary EHS information and data to management and related internal and external stakeholders to mitigate EHS risks, continuously improve EHS programs, achieve EHS objectives, and improve EHS culture.

  • Direct and lead the company's EHS audit program to measure site compliance with applicable internal and external standards to identify EHS risk, define proactive mitigations, and develop associated corrective and preventative action plans.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies on a local, state, and federal/country level. Manage and control all the company's EHS regulatory reporting requirements, ensuring submission by required dates and maintenance of records as required.

  • Manage the company's Environmental Management System (EMS) to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies and conformance to ISO standards. Proactively influence direct reports and internal / external customers' ability to utilize data and trends as related to EHS or ISO compliance, strengthening the EHS Management System and overall EHS culture.

  • Lead safety incident investigation teams to determine root cause and corrective and preventive actions. Develop and implement corrective actions as appropriate.

  • Responsible for Real Estate Property Environmental Due Diligence program management; Phase I - Phase II review, recommendations.

  • Establish and manage ergonomic, injury case management, and return to work programs.

  • Make decisive, sound, high quality decisions on escalated EHS issues, accurately judging the urgency, response and need for further escalation.

  • Partner with the Business Continuity Team to document recovery plans.

  • Maintain a strong network of government, industry partners, private and public sector peer network groups, leading benchmarks, and play a leading role in industry EHS forums and organizations.

  • Oversee the deployment, training, testing, and ongoing management of EHS technology and tools.

  • Partner with Operations, Research & Development, and Real Estate & Facilities Services team to ensure capital projects and changes in processes, equipment, and systems are carried out in accordance with the concepts of EHS by Design and relevant EHS requirements.

  • Provide oversight for EHS functional projects, ensuring budget and schedule adherence, and delivery of agreed to project objectives.

  • Interface with REFS Engineering on building HVAC system(s) operations impacting Indoor Air Quality and other building energy/sustainability initiatives to ensure EHS compliance.

  • Support and respond to EHS-related requests from external stakeholders such as investors and customers.

  • Work cross-functionally to develop and monitor KPIs & SLAs in areas of responsibility, report on status and progress on improving performance.

  • Responsible for establishing multi-year EHS budget, staffing and associated capital improvement plans to support overall strategy and influencing Sr. Leaders with strong vision and justification plans.

  • Develop, implement and cascade pertinent EHS training to Exact Sciences employees through innovative and efficient learning and development strategies.

  • Partner with Corporate Security to lead the company's site level Emergency Response efforts, including Emergency Response Team (ERT) recruitment, training, annual drills, and planning preparations.

  • Motivate and inspire employees to do their best work through coaching and employee engagement activities including communicating goals and objectives, organizing and prioritizing work, performance reviews, training, employee development, and managing work performance.

  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills including strong executive presence and desire to continually improve communication and execution abilities.

  • Ability to apply sound judgment when making decisions and be assertive and proactive in identifying and resolving conflicts, issues, and concerns.

  • Ability to build strong relationships and work with others in a collaborative, integrated manner.

  • Ability to identify, recruit, develop and retain qualified EHS professionals to provide site services globally.

  • Ability to prioritize daily tasks, operational demands and meet deadlines.

  • Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance onsite at one of our locations.

  • Ability to act with an inclusion mindset and model these behaviors for the organization.

  • Ability to work designated schedule including nights and/or weekends, and to be on call 24/7 to respond to company-related EHS emergencies.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.

  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.

  • Ability to travel up to 30% of working time away from work location within US and internationally, including overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field required. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation required.

  • Thorough knowledge of Federal, State and Local safety and environmental laws and regulations. (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc., and other applicable local requirements)

  • Experience with management systems such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001

  • 10+ years of experience leading successful EHS organizations across multiple locations, regions, or areas within life science industries, preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience leading or directing people and/or project teams with a similar scope.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead in an emergency, and in stressful situations.

  • Strong computer proficiency with safety management software, and Microsoft Office programs.

  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and exposure in the domestic and international EHS arena dealing with and managing EHS-related issues in a similarly sized private sector corporation.

  • Working knowledge of state-of-the-art EHS programs and systems; experience with Ideagen EHS/ProcessMAP preferred.

  • Understanding current and emerging risks facing corporate leaders, high profile personalities, and the technology industry, including current and emerging digital innovations and trends.

  • Exceptional executive communication and interpersonal skills with the proven ability to transfer knowledge into concrete business plans, decisions, and actions.

  • Experience in an FDA, CLIA, or CAP regulated industry.

  • CPR / First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.

Salary Range:

$152,000.00 - $242,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
