We foster an inclusive culture and are looking for diverse, talented people to join Alcon. As a Director supporting U.S. Process Development of Engineering Services Team, a typical day will include:

  • Directs and coordinates activities concerned with research and development of projects of major significance to Alcon's long-term future which are highly difficult and complex in nature and require the expert application of advanced knowledge in ophthalmic medical device/science/technology.

  • Works with wide latitude for unreviewed action or decision and represents the organization in outside discussions and technical forums relative to the broad corporate direction in science and technology.

  • Provides primary technical direction to sophisticated projects of major importance and difficulty where the complexity of technical problems involved require the broad application of advanced ophthalmic medical device/science/technology knowledge.

  • Uses deep technical/scientific knowledge to advise and develop strategies which significantly contribute to organizational objectives.

  • Represent the organization as primary internal and customer scientific/technical contact as required on contracts or operations. Conducts briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives including equivalent and above management.

  • Responsible for strategy implementation within the subprogram, area or country. Liaises with other areas of the business providing senior input and advice to global projects.

  • Develop concepts and propose approach, to address identified ophthalmic medical device/science/technology needs.

  • Supply technical advice and counsel to other professionals and represent the organization in outside discussions and technical forums.

  • Originate and apply complex concepts and propose new and unique approaches, methods, procedures and designs with regular use of creativity and originality to research and/or development.

  • Assure continuity of products and processes assessment feasibility, research, design, development, compliance to customer and non-customer requirements, transfer to production.

  • Provides leadership direction, determining and developing approach to solutions by coordinating multiple resources to solve complex problems.

  • Lead design reviews, assign and review action items or delegate these tasks.

  • Ensure regulatory / statutory / legislative compliance for all project work.

  • Act as a mentor in the engineering organization, may direct the activities of senior technical professionals to accomplish objectives.

  • Exhibits an exceptional degree of creativity, resourcefulness and interdisciplinary scientific and technical knowledge over a wide array of problems.

  • Demonstrates ability to work under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals.

  • Assignments are often self-initiated.

  • Courses of action that are determined and pursued achieve minimization of life cycle costs and meet project schedule according to customer need (time, cost, functionality and quality).

  • Advanced technical research study and application advisorship is provided to senior management.

  • Technical assistance is provided as needed to support regulatory, manufacturing, quality, marketing and other Core Team needs.

  • Effectively interacts with all segments of Company to facilitate product development and support.

  • Demonstrates leadership qualities. Manages in an informal matrix organization.

  • Documentation is complete and accurate and utilized as a model / template that serves as guidance for others to follow; 100% compliant to regulatory and mandatory industry performance standards.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO ALCON:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +18 yrs; Assoc.+ 14 yrs; M.S.+ 7 yrs; PhD+6 yrs)

  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English

  • 10 Years of Relevant Experience

  • 6 Years of Demonstrated Leadership

Preferred Experience:

  • Uses deep technical/scientific knowledge to advise and implement strategic decisions. Recognized as an expert internally and may be recognized externally.

  • Seasoned project management skills; multiple projects of complexity and/or large-scale nature.

  • Innovative leadership skills on critical business projects.

  • Proven motivational and results-oriented techniques.

  • Known authority among peers in ophthalmic surgical device/science/technology industry, applying advanced principles, theories and concepts.

  • Work experience contributing to the formation of new principles and concepts for new product research and/or development.

  • Interactions with senior personnel on complex or significant technical matters, often requiring coordination across organizational lines.

  • Typically, an advanced degree within an appropriate scientific/technical discipline is required. Experience factors typically are related to prior ophthalmic medical device/science/technology achievements, increasingly responsible background in organization building of a scientific/technical function, and accomplishments in positions of leadership.

  • Project management expertise with proven results in multiple areas.

  • Possess significant leadership skills to effect change.

  • Has proven ability to develop/implement advanced processes, techniques related to product development and/or critical systems.

  • Proven leadership track record of results.

  • Capability to motivate complex teams cross-functionally; directs strategic and business goals.

  • Organizational management of multiple disciplines.

  • Known authority among peers in ophthalmic surgical device/science/technology industry, applying advanced principles, theories and concepts.

  • Work experience contributing to the formation of new principles and concepts for new product research and/or development.

  • Proven ability to develop solutions for unusually complex problems that is highly original, innovative, and leading edge.

  • Interactions with senior personnel on complex or significant technical matters, often requiring coordination across organizational lines.

  • Expert knowledge of ISO, FDA, MDD and regulations applicable to the design and development of medical device/science/technology.

  • Able to develop solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of creativity, and originality.

  • Robust process management, problem solving skills and superior presentation capabilities.
